More than one heart: 5 animals that break the rules of nature

We all learn that animals have one heart. It beats. It pumps blood. Done. Easy, right? But the animal world doesn’t always play by the rules. Some animals have more than one heart. And it works just fine for them.

Why would an animal need extra hearts? Well, there are a few reasons. Some move really fast and need a lot of oxygen. Others live where oxygen is hard to come by. And some just evolved differently. Nature has a funny way of making sure everyone survives.

Here are five animals that prove one heart is not always enough.

Octopus

Octopuses are already mysterious and super smart. And they have three hearts. Two pump blood to the gills so they can breathe. The third pumps blood to the rest of the body. Funny thing: when they swim, the main heart actually slows down. That’s why they prefer crawling along the ocean floor. Makes sense, right?

3/6

Squid

Squids are fast. Really fast. That speed needs oxygen, and oxygen needs blood. So, they also have three hearts. Two handle the gills, and the third pumps blood to the rest of the body. It keeps them quick, alert, and ready to escape any predator.

4/6

Earthworm

Earthworms might seem simple, but their bodies are actually pretty smart. They don’t have just one heart; instead, they have five pairs of aortic arches, which are like little pumps that move blood through their long, segmented bodies. This setup works like having a bunch of tiny hearts, helping them live underground where there isn’t much oxygen.

5/6

Cuttlefish

Cuttlefish can change colors like magic. But all that energy needs fuel. They have three hearts, two for breathing and one for the rest of the body. That way, they can move fast, hunt well, and escape danger. Extra hearts = extra energy.

6/6

Leeches

Leeches are a bit unusual. They don’t have true hearts. Instead, their bodies rely on muscular pumps and tiny vessels to move blood. It’s not a neat heart like ours, but it works perfectly in their wet, squirmy world.
