No tickets needed: Abu Dhabi airport launches shopping pass for non-travellers who can come to just shop
One of the first things you check while heading to the airport is the tickets. While one might forget their luggage, they ensure carrying the documents to the airport because entry otherwise is strictly prohibited. Well, not anymore. In a first-of-its-kind move, the Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi has launched a 'shopping pass' that allows UAE residents to access parts of the terminal only reserved for departing passengers. The new pass will now allow non-ticket holders to shop and dine at the airport for eight weeks, opening the airport's retail and leisure spaces for all.

How does the initiative work?

Under the new initiative, visitors have to register in advance on the airport's website to receive a digital security pass with a QR code. The code will be checked at checkpoints, shops and exit points.Entry is time-bound with visitors being allowed to spend four hours exploring the space before leaving after returning their security badge. Inside, visitors can browse duty-free and luxury retail outlets, dine at eateries and explore the airport's architecture without having to spend money on buying tickets. The Zayed International Airport, one of the most famous ones in UAE, is known for popular outlets such as one by celebrity chef Todd English along with luxury brands including Cartier, Chanel, Hermes and more.

Restrictions and limitations

However, there are some restrictions. Visitors are not allowed to carry personal electronic devices including laptops and tablets inside. Moreover, the purchase of tobacco and alcohol without a valid boarding pass is not allowed.Interestingly, visitors who spend at least Dh200 inside can receive up to four hours of free parking, provided they validate their stay before exiting.

Zayed International Airport

Located in UAE, the Zayed International Airport was opened on February 9, 2024 and named after the Founding Father of the country, late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The same year, it was named the most beautiful airport in the world at the annual Prix Versailles International architecture awards. The airport has been a popular attraction among tourists for its sustainable architecture and now, the shopping pass will add another attractive feature to it. While new in the country, shopping passes have been previously introduced at numerous airports in US including Seattle and Detroit. Whereas other airports like Singapore's Changi offer extensive retail and leisure experiences on the public side of the terminal.
