NASA's Sunita Williams opens up about alarming weight loss photos from space in her latest video
NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has recently responded to the rumors about her health while onboard the International Space Station (ISS). In the latest video, Williams elaborated on the significant changes in her appearance that had raised concerns and questions, putting the public at ease about her well-being.
As per the data and reports presented all over media outlets, rumors about Williams’ health started with people noticing that she appeared weaker and thinner after spending over 150 days in space. Some experts were concerned that she had lost an immense amount of weight, a typical fear for astronauts on long missions. Reports also suggested that the stress and burden of space life could be affecting her physical condition, including her physical appearance.
In her recent video, Williams opened up about the changes in her appearance. She mentioned that changes in her appearance were not due to significant weight loss, but in fact, due to a phenomenon called ‘fluid shift’. In space, without gravity pulling fluids down, bodily fluids move upward towards the face and upper body. This phenomenon can cause the faces of astronauts to visibly appear puffier and their limbs to look weaker and thinner.
Williams also mentioned that she had in fact gained more muscle, particularly in her legs, thanks to regular exercise. She noted, “My thighs and butt are a little bigger because we do a lot of squats up here,” reassuring everyone that her health is stable and not deteriorating, and she is in good shape.
Regardless of her reassurances, reports and data presented by NASA insiders indicated that maintaining a high-calorie and perfectly balanced diet that is essential for space missions had been challenging for Williams.
While Williams did not provide detailed information about her precise diet, she did share some of the meals she enjoys, including Turkish fish stew with olives and rice, emphasizing that she is still getting proper nutrition, regardless of the challenges.
Medical experts have emphasized Williams’ situation. Dr. Vinay Gupta, a pulmonologist, mentioned to the Daily Mail, that while Williams is not at risk presently, her appearance could suggest significant stress on her body. Spending prolonged periods in microgravity can affect bones, muscles, and overall health, and experts are still studying how these changes impact astronauts.
Williams and her fellow astronaut, Barry Wilmore, are predicted to stay on the ISS until February 2025, as they wait for a safe journey home. Their return was delayed after a problem was discovered with Boeing’s spacecraft, which had initially been planned for their journey back to Earth. Instead, they will return aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, which has been found to be safer for the mission.
Even with the challenges of long-term space travel, Williams remains optimistic and committed to her mission. Her updates have reassured the public that she is in good health and competent to continue her work aboard the ISS.
