'My son has always been brave': Parents of the Bondi Beach ‘hero’ speak about son's courage
Imagine being a father of two, and still managing to rise to the occasion of saving the day — not from some ordinary hiccup, but from a gunman in action!
It was one of those moments that stops everyone in their tracks — gunfire at a Hanukkah celebration near Bondi Beach on December 14. Australia, and honestly, the rest of the world, watched in shock as chaos erupted.
At least 15 people lost their lives. Dozens more were hurt. In the middle of it all, Ahmed al-Ahmed, just a regular dad with two kids, did something extraordinary. He ran straight at one of the attackers, wrestled the gun out of his hands, and managed to stop him — right before getting shot himself. Someone caught the whole thing on video. It blew up online, and suddenly, Ahmed was a hero, with leaders and regular folks everywhere thanking him for his courage.
Now, Ahmed’s in the hospital, fighting to recover.
His parents are by his side, speaking up about his life and the kind of person he’s always been. “He’s always been brave,” his mom said. She talked about how he’s always wanted to help others, and you could tell she meant it. People all over are sharing her words, finding comfort and inspiration in them as they try to make sense of what happened.
The attack went down on December 14. It was crowded, loud, and terrifying. When things turned violent, Ahmed didn’t freeze. He charged right at danger, took on the gunman, and pulled the weapon away before the police even got there. There’s no doubt — he saved lives that night.
Ahmed took bullets to his shoulder and hand. He was rushed to St George’s Hospital, badly hurt, but alive. And his resilience? People can’t stop talking about it. Leaders, strangers, everyone is cheering him on.
His family’s story just makes his actions feel even more real. Ahmed’s parents only recently moved to Australia from Syria. Through interpreters, they talked about how Ahmed’s always been the protector, even before this night — probably something he learned from his time in the security forces and police back home. His dad said Ahmed didn’t hesitate for a second when he saw people bleeding. He just ran toward the danger.
His mom keeps saying Ahmed never did any of this for attention. She’s just grateful he’s alive and proud he stayed true to who he is. Their words cut through the noise, reminding everyone that behind headlines and heroics, there’s a family holding its breath, hoping for the best.
Australia — and honestly, the world — has rallied around Ahmed. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns showed up at the hospital and called him a hero. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and other big names have said Ahmed represents the best of Australia. People everywhere are pitching in to help with his recovery. The fundraiser for him took off almost instantly, overflowing with messages of support, gratitude, and hope from all corners.
Ahmed’s story isn’t just about tragedy or violence. It’s about what people are capable of in the worst moments — and how one brave act can remind us all that courage is still out there.
