Louvre Heist: Why Dhoom 2 memes are flooding the internet
It was the kind of crime that seemed designed to break the internet.
On Sunday morning, four thieves disguised as construction workers broke into the Louvre Museum in Paris, smashed open glass display cases inside the Apollo Gallery, stole the priceless jewels and vanished on motorbikes — all within seven minutes. Their loot: eight priceless pieces of Napoleonic jewellery, including the emerald necklace of Empress Marie-Louise and the crown of Empress Eugénie.
By afternoon, French officials called it “a national disaster.”
By evening, the internet had rebranded it as “Dhoom 2: The French Connection.”
In the 2006 blockbuster Dhoom 2, Hrithik Roshan’s Aryan Singhania (Mr. A) pulls off an eerily similar stunt: a museum heist in disguise, a lightning-fast getaway, and the signature motorbike exit.
So when the real Louvre thieves mirrored that choreography, the internet collectively decided that Mr. A had escaped fiction, and had returned - this time to Paris.
‘Dhoom 2’ wasn’t just a film; it was a cultural phenomenon. The iconic scene where Hrithik Roshan is disguised as a statue inside the museum feels prophetic. The Louvre robbers may not have his cheekbones, but they’ve certainly matched his timing.
An Instagram reel shared by @luxoeus has captured that mood perfectly. The real synced the visuals from the museum to Dhoom Machale and captioned it ‘The music that played while the robbery took place at Louvre Museum.” The rest was taken care of by the comment section.
“Is the admin Indian?” asked one user.

The global reaction has been less Les Misérables, more Desi Memerables. Netizens have flooded the internet with meme. No doubt that Hrithik Roshan’s Mr. A has ‘finally gone international’ and some are rewatching.
One clip of the Louvre’s glass pyramid set to Dhoom Machale has clocked hundreds of thousands of views, with users joking that Hrithik’s Mr. A has “finally gone international.”
On X (formerly Twitter), some users also drew parallels with Ocean’s 8, the 2018 Hollywood heist film starring Sandra Bullock, where a team of women rob jewels during the Met Gala. “Not my favorite movie becoming a reality (Oceans 8)” an X user sighed.
The internet’s way of processing crisis is bizarre, and Lourve heist is no different. What the French police see as a criminal act, the algorithm sees as content. And every tragedy must pass through meme filtration before it becomes ‘real’.

“I guess the plan was made by Lester,” quipped another. “Went to look up Hrithik’s character for Dhoom 2 to find tweets about the heist… a mistake A MISTAKE,” another wrote. Some are rewatching the film for ‘research purposes’, “Gonna rewatch Dhoom 1 and 2 to commemorate the robbery in the Louvre,” a second X user wrote. "And Off course the thieves are watching dhoom series nowadays," another quipped. "This is what I thought tho hahahhaa," wrote a third. “Scripted out of a movie!” another Instagram user thought. A National Crisis, Global punchline

According to the French Culture Ministry, the stolen jewels are valued at €88 million ($102 million), but their historical worth is far greater. A window into 19th-century French imperial history, the stolen jewellery include the Emerald necklace of Empress Marie-Louise, Napoleon I’s second wife, emerald earrings worn by Empress Marie-Louise, crown worn by Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, brooch of Empress Eugenie, crown worn by Queen Marie-Amelie, queen of France and Queen Hortense, a sapphire necklace worn by Queen Marie-Amelie and Queen Hortense, a sapphire earring worn by Queen Marie-Amelie and Queen Hortense, and reliquary brooch. The global reaction has been less Les Misérables, more Desi Memerables. France mourned the loss of its heritage; the internet mourned the lack of streaming availability for Ocean’s 8. “Great, now I want to watch Ocean’s 8 and it's not available anywhere, really???” another said. The internet’s way of processing crisis is bizarre, and Lourve heist is no different.
