While India is struggling with high gold prices, Earth's largest gold mine discovered in China which will make it richer by....
Gold prices have been reaching unprecedented heights and making headlines worldwide. Its price surged to nearly a lakh per 10 grams earlier this year, marking a historic high and making 2025 the strongest year for gold since 1979, when it also experienced a massive rally amid global economic turmoil.
With the festival season around the corner, when Gold jewellery traditionally sees a boom, the world has just discovered the largest gold deposits in history. Could this new treasure trove influence Gold's future and its role as a reserve asset?
Around 300 tons of gold are already thought to be within reach at depths near 2,000 meters, with geological models suggesting the veins extend to 3,000 meters underground. Chinese state media, Xinhua News, confirmed the discovery in early October, following months of underground drilling and geological modeling. Such depths are roughly as tall as three Mount Everests stacked upon each other. The deposit includes more than 40 gold-bearing veins, which geological expert Chen Rulin of the Hunan Geological Bureau described as containing “visible gold,” a rare and promising indication of exceptionally high-grade ore.
These samples have shown gold concentrations as high as 138 grams per ton, which is exceptionally rich. This high grade means more gold can be extracted from each ton of rock.
Extracting gold from depths of 2,000-3,000 meters brings unavoidable technical hurdles like managing extreme rock pressure, high geothermal heat, groundwater control, and ensuring adequate ventilation, and doing so safely and economically. Large-scale deep mining projects can take 10–20 years from discovery through development to production, given these challenges.
Previously a research paper published in 2024, in the journal Ore Geology Reviews highlighted northeastern Hunan, where Wangu is located, as the most promising gold zone in the entire Jiangnan geological belt. The study talked about how regional fault systems act as natural pathways, guiding mineral-rich fluids and concentrating gold into clusters called “mineable shoots,” many of which haven’t yet been fully explored.
If Wangu follows this geological pattern, instead of having just one big deposit, it might contain several interconnected ore bodies.

The largest Gold deposits in the world!
Chinese geologists from the Hunan Provincial Geological Bureau and the Hunan Provincial Institute of Geology discovered a “supergiant” gold deposit that could hold over 1,000 metric tons of gold beneath the Wangu gold field in Pingjiang County, Hunan Province.Around 300 tons of gold are already thought to be within reach at depths near 2,000 meters, with geological models suggesting the veins extend to 3,000 meters underground. Gold
This Gold rich region is situated along fault lines
The Wangu goldfield lies within the Jiangnan orogenic belt, which is a geologically active zone formed by ancient continental collisions that created “highways” for mineral-rich hydrothermal fluids to deposit gold along fault lines. This complex formation has led to rich, continuous gold veins, but mining this resource is not easy.Prediction based on estimates
The initial estimates for the Wangu gold deposit are based on a “first-pass resource estimate." This is like an early picture showing what might be there before the heavy groundwork, such as more drilling, detailed 3D modeling, and testing of the ore, gets done. These early figures can change quite a bit, either going up or down, as scientists gather more information.Rise in Gold prices 2025

What does the future look like
China is already the world’s largest gold producer, consuming far more gold than it mines annually. The Wangu discovery might be a possibility to enhance China’s domestic gold production, helping it to strengthen its global market position furthermore.Top Comment
