For the first time in Himachal Pradesh, a 10-foot-long king cobra, the world's deadliest snake, was rescued in Sirmaur district, sending shockwaves across the community. The gigantic reptile was spotted crawling through a wheat crop in the Girinagar forest division, creating an instant sense of panic among local villagers. Out of fear for their safety, the locals immediately informed the Forest Department, which reacted swiftly to the news. A special team, led by Range Officer Surendra Sharma and aided by experienced snake catchers of the Simbalbara National Park, carried out the risky rescue mission.
Divisional Forest Officer Aishwarya Rai called the incident a major milestone, highlighting the significance of the rescue for the area. Though this is the first successful rescue of a king cobra in Himachal, the snake has been seen in Sirmaur earlier, in 2021 and 2023. The area's proximity to the forest regions of Uttarakhand makes it a perfect place for this venomous species. Following the successful rescue, the king cobra was released back into its natural habitat safely, ensuring the safety of the reptile as well as the local population.

- Deadly neurotoxins: Its venom is packed with neurotoxins that paralyze the nervous system, leading to death by respiratory failure.
- Delayed symptoms: Unlike many venomous snakes, its venom doesn’t cause immediate pain, delaying symptoms and making rapid treatment crucial.
- Rapid fatality: Without medical intervention, death from a king cobra bite can occur in as little as 20 minutes.
- Snake-eating diet: The king cobra primarily feeds on other snakes, including its own species, giving it a unique hunting strategy and niche in the wild.
