Is your Gmail username too embarrassing to share? Now you can change it – here’s a step-by-step guide
For years, email has been a steady part of our digital lives. You create a Gmail account once, and it tends to stay with you. At the time, most people didn’t put much thought into the username; it was just something you needed to get started.
Now, that same email ID is linked to almost everything, from work and documents to bank accounts and subscriptions. Over time, many users feel that the old username no longer represents them.
That is why Google’s latest update is drawing attention. It gives users the option to change their Gmail username without creating a new account.
Google has introduced a feature that allows users to edit the username part of their Gmail address, the portion that appears before “@gmail.com”.
Until now, this option did not exist. Anyone who wanted a different email ID had to open a new account. With this update, users can keep their existing account and switch to a new username.
A common concern with any account change is whether important data could be affected. In this case, everything stays as it is.
After changing your Gmail username:
Your emails remain in the same inbox
Photos and files stay unchanged
Your account history continues as before
There is no need to move data or worry about losing anything.
The update also ensures that your previous Gmail address continues to function.
It becomes an alternate email linked to the same account. As a result:
Emails sent to your old address will still be delivered
You can sign in using either the old or the new email ID
This applies across services such as YouTube, Maps, and Google Drive.
Before making a change, there are a few limits to keep in mind, as mentioned in a report by NDTV.
You can update your Gmail username once every 12 months
There is a lifetime limit of three changes
You have the option to return to your original email
Google has also advised users to take a backup before starting the process.
If the feature is available for your account, you can follow these steps:
Open your Google Account settings
Go to “Personal info”
Click on “Email” under Contact info
Select “Google Account email”
Choose the option to edit your email
Enter your new username
Confirm the change
Once completed, both the old and new email IDs will continue to work, and all emails will arrive in the same inbox.
At present, the feature has started rolling out in the United States. It may take some time before it becomes available in other regions.
Email continues to play an important role in daily life, yet many people still use usernames created years ago.
This update offers a simple way to update that identity without losing access to data or services. It is a practical change that addresses a long-standing user need.
