Is Lady Gaga retiring? Australia’s famous albino carpet python set to end a 20-year run at an Australian wildlife park

Most people don’t expect a snake to have a public career or a retirement plan. Yet Lady Gaga, an albino carpet python living at Territory Wildlife Park near Darwin, has done both. For nearly two decades, she has been one of the park’s most recognisable residents. Pale yellow, calm, and famously tolerant of being handled, she helped thousands of visitors get over their fear of snakes. Now, at around 18 years old, she is being retired from regular public encounters.

It seems like a small announcement. Just one snake. But it says a lot about how wildlife parks think about ageing animals, education, and welfare.

Lady Gaga’s soft yellow scales set her apart from other pythons

Lady Gaga is an albino Darwin carpet python, a colour morph of Morelia spilota. Albinism means she lacks melanin, the pigment that gives most carpet pythons their dark patterns. Instead, her scales are soft yellow and cream, with pinkish eyes.

That pale colouring is also why she would struggle in the wild. Without camouflage, hunting becomes harder where predators spot you more easily. Experts say albino snakes rarely survive long outside captivity. In a managed environment, though, they can thrive. She was born at Territory Wildlife Park on 14 November 2007 as part of a captive breeding program. By adulthood, she reached about six and a half feet. Large enough to impress visitors yet small enough to handle safely.

Carpet pythons are common in Australia, but rarely understood

Carpet pythons are found across much of Australia, in forests and woodlands. Even suburban areas. They are non-venomous constrictors, feeding mostly on birds and small mammals. They’re also strong climbers, and this is why they often seem comfortable draped over a branch or a keeper’s arm. In the wild, their patterned scales blend into bark and leaf litter. Lady Gaga’s version of that pattern just happens to be blonde.

Albino carpet pythons like her are extremely rare in nature. Most people who see one will only ever do so in a wildlife park or private collection. Snake retirement isn’t dramatic. For Lady Gaga, it means stepping away from daily presentations. Less handling. Fewer transfers. More uninterrupted rest. The same enclosure standards. The same careful monitoring. She will still live at Territory Wildlife Park. Just without the crowds.
