Iron Lady 3.0: From a grunge enthusiast to the public representative, how Sanae Takaichi scripted history as Japan's first female Prime Minister
There’s a new in the block – . And this time, it’s Japan’s turn to bask in glory as the land of the rising sun has elected its first female Prime Minister at last.
Sanae Takaichi, 64, has risen to become the nation’s first female Prime Minister, as she steps into the top post at a time of political turbulence, economic strain, and shifting global dynamics. This one’s a landmark moment in Japan’s male-dominated politics, as her historic breakthrough not only breaks a color barrier, but her deeply conservative brand of leadership also promises to chart a bold, and potentially polarising, new course for the country.
From gunge roots to political learnings: Rise of a rockstar
Sanae Takaichi’s ascent, at first glance, is nothing short of cinematic.
Over three decades, Takaichi built experience in key roles – including as Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications and Minister of Economic Security – climbed the ranks of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), ultimately winning its leadership on 4 October, becoming the first woman to lead the party. On 21 October, she was elected by parliament as Japan’s first female Prime Minister.
On 21 October 2025, Takaichi was elected Prime Minister by the Japanese Parliament, becoming the country’s first woman in the role. She secured a coalition with the right-wing Japan Innovation Party (Ishin no Kai) and obtained 237 votes in the lower house — just above the required majority.
Although Takaichi’s coalition is still fragile, as it lacks a comfortable majority in both houses of the Diet, meaning her government will need to navigate carefully to pass legislation, it doesn’t take away the glory from her victory, as she became the first female in the so-called men’s field.
Breaking the glass ceiling: From drumsticks to Diet floor
Takaichi’s election comes as a historic milestone, because Japan has never before had a woman at its helm. Even within the LDP and in Japan’s political tradition, hers is an unprecedented breakthrough. However, while the symbolic milestone of gender progress is clear, Takaichi’s policy platform and political stance mark little change in ideological tone.
Takaichi, although, has enjoyed rather modern hobbies and habits in her younger years, as a politician, she remains a staunch conservative – specifically, an openly pro-nationalist. Her agenda emphasizes constitutional revision, stronger defense, tighter immigration, and economic stimulus – all classic conservative themes. What’s more startling is that at the same time, when Japan’s ranking on gender equality remains among the world’s lowest, Takaichi herself opposes reforms such as separate surnames for married couples and supports male-only imperial succession.
Iron Lady 3.0?
Takaichi’s journey to the highest office in Japan’s politics has been one of its own kind. However, Japan’s Iron Lady has her set of inspirations straight – she is a great admirer of former British Prime Minister (the OG Iron Lady) and is aligned closely with the late Shinzo Abe’s policy vision.
Cherry on top? Takaichi’s rock-and-ride past adds a distinct flavor; the once heavy-metal drummer now playing premier!
What’s ahead?
While her rise is remarkable and her appointment is historic in form – especially as a woman in a male-dominated field – her views and decisions as a female politician remain pretty conflicting and contradictory, and most importantly, somewhat aligned with Thatcher’s choices. Takaichi’s cabinet includes only a handful of women, which raises questions about how much her leadership will shift the broader culture of gender equality in Japan. Moreover, lest we forget, Thatcher’s fall – despite holding 10 Downing Street in her grasp for over a decade – was spectacular as her party turned against her.
Will Takaichi’s tenure see a similar kind of uproar in due time – if she follows the path of her idol? Time shall tell.
