IPL 2025: 5 IPL teams that are no longer a part of the league and why

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been one of the most exciting and awaited cricket leagues in India with some of the most talented and popular cricketers joining city-based teams to defend their titles and win the trophies. Organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) it is a Twenty20 (T20) league, where cricketers are acquired by teams to play for them. IPL 2025 began on March 22nd with a captivating match between Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR, and has hooked the audience with the consecutive matches ever since. However, did you know that there are certain teams that were once a part of the league, but are no longer allowed to play? Below are five franchises that are not a part of IPL 2025.

Deccan Chargers

Deccan Chargers is surely the most popular one in this list of five. The team was one of the eight original franchises created for the league. It won the 2009 IPL by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) with Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist as the captain. However, after the 2012 season, the team was terminated by the IPL governing council for breaching the terms of the contract. The team which was owned by Deccan Chronicles Holdings Ltd was put up for auction due to financial issues in the year 2012. PVP Ventures bid for the franchise but their plan of dividing it into two parts for the next 10 years did not sit well with the IPL governing council that eventually dissolved it. Pune Warriors India

Owned by the famous Sahara Group Sports Limited, the Pune Warriors India played three IPL seasons namely 2011, 2012 and 2013. Due to the financial issues faced by the team which did not come close to winning any season, the BCCI terminated it in October 2013.

Gujarat Lions

In 2016, two of the fan-favourite teams of IPL, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) were banned from the league for two years due to a spot-fixing and betting scandal. However, the game had to go on and thus a new team titled Gujarat Lions was created which topped its debut season with nine wins from 14 matches. They were upset by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the playoffs and they lost the race to the finals. The team was shelved when RR and CSK were back!Image Credits: Getty Images

Kochi Tuskers Kerala

Players such as Ravindra Jadeja, Mutthia Murlitharan and Mahila Jayawardene were some famous faces of the 2011 IPL team Kochi Tuskers Kerala which finished eighth on the points table in its maiden season. The team failed to pay the 10% bank guarantee to be paid at the beginning of the season as a part of the franchise fee. Thus, the same year the BCCI terminated the team and the subsequent season was a nine-team tournament.

Rising Pune Super Giants

The Rising Pune Super Giants was another team created to replace CSK and RR in 2016. Owned by Sanjiv Goenka's RP-SG Group, the team finished at seven in the points table during their debut season with the legendary cricketer MS Dhoni at the helm. However, in the next season, Steve Smith was announced as the successor to Dhoni. While he was able to lead the team to the finals, RPS lost to Mumbai Indians (MI) in a thrilling match.
