Meet Payal Nag, the teen sensation and world's first limbless archery champion

Payal Nag, an 18-year-old from Odisha's Balangir district, was born to a daily-wage mason. At age eight, a horrific electrocution accident claimed all four limbs, landing her in an orphanage before she rebuilt her life. A viral video of her painting with her mouth caught coach Kuldeep Kumar Vedwan's eye, leading her to his Maata Vaishno Devi Shrine Archery Academy in Katra. There, the farmer's son mentored her with handmade setups, changing her potential into power.

Her unique shooting style

Unlike her idol Sheetal Devi, who shoots using her feet, Payal developed her own unique technique using a custom prosthetic arm that stabilises the bow while she draws it with her shoulder, mouth, and a special trigger mechanism. This method soon became second nature, fuelling her meteoric rise as the world’s first quadruple amputee to compete internationally in archery.

The Historic Bangkok Gold

On the evening of April 4, 2026, in Bangkok, the 18-year-old stayed composed under pressure to beat her idol Sheetal Devi 139-136, securing gold at the World Para Archery Series Final, her debut senior international event, according to a PTI report. The triumph transcended the set records in the sport itself, marking a historic milestone.

But, it wasn't new; Payal had edged her at 2025 Para Archery Nationals in Jaipur and pushed limits at Khelo India Para Games.

Achievers’ coach

Kuldeep Vedwan, their coach who trained both archers, credited belief over resources for their success. Payal's victory, building on national golds, looks next to Paralympics. Her tale transcends just sport, embodying courage that endures all odds.
