The case has now attracted widespread interest, with most people stunned at the lengths gone to in reaction to the robbery. IRS exposes woman’s $20 million fraud—her husband’s response makes headlines
Cynthia "Cindy" Marabella, a former controller of finances at Gilmore Construction LLC, is charged with masterminding a massive embezzlement scheme, allegedly stealing $20 million from the company over seven years. An IRS probe later found that the stolen money was used to fund a lavish lifestyle, including expensive purchases like a purple Lamborghini.
While Marabella supposedly reaped the rewards of her deceitful schemes, Larry Gilmore, her employer, was oblivious to the huge amount of money being lost. The scam ultimately went awry, and a string of unforeseen and frightening developments ensued. A financial crime, which had initially started, escalated into something far more sinister—something that would put Gilmore in the midst of a dreadful experience.
Man kidnaps wife’s boss to erase her $20 million crime, threatens family’s lives
Larry Gilmore's drive to work became a scene out of a crime novel when he spotted a purple Lamborghini—the same one that his ex-employee had bought with pilfered funds. Soon after, a Chevrolet Suburban smashed into his Porsche, staging an unbelievable ambush. Two men got out, one of whom was acting as if apologizing before the other slipped behind him and into a chokehold and pulled him into a vehicle.
Zip-tied, hooded, and robbed of his phone, Gilmore was taken to a desert area, where he was assaulted and kept at gunpoint. And who was his abductor? No less than William Costa, Marabella's husband of more than a decade. Costa presented him with two ominous options: either inform the IRS that the loot was a "gift" or suffer violent retribution.
Not intimidated by death threats, Gilmore seized his opportunity—and marched straight to the police. Costa was arrested, and his $1.5 million bail reflected how serious the offense now was.
