Christian Roberto López Rodríguez from Spain has claimed the fastest 100 m backwards in high heels with an impressive time of 16.55 seconds, the
Guinness World Records said in an official statement on Monday.
"He broke his own record of 20.05 seconds that he’d set on our Spanish TV show La Noche De Los Récords," the statement added.
Wearing blue high heels of minimum 7cm, paired with blue socks, red shorts and a pink and blue long-sleeved top, Christian Roberto risked blisters and sprained ankles to claim the record.
Backward sprints are tougher than you think
If you’ve ever tried sprinting backwards, you know right away—it’s no joke. Running forward feels natural because that’s how our bodies are built to move. But the second you flip it around, everything feels awkward, clunky, and way harder.
The big challenge? You’re asking muscles that usually support movement to suddenly drive movement. Your hamstrings, calves, and glutes are doing overtime, and your quads fire differently than they do in a forward sprint. Add in the fact that you can’t see where you’re going, and suddenly your brain and body are working double-time just to stay upright.
On top of that, backwards sprints torch your lungs fast. Because you’re less efficient moving in reverse, you burn more energy in less time. Even a short burst leaves most people gassed. That’s why athletes use backward running drills to build endurance, balance, and injury resistance.
It’s awkward, it’s humbling, and it’ll make muscles you didn’t even know existed scream at you the next day. But that’s exactly why backwards sprints are such an underrated workout. If you want a fresh challenge—and a serious leg burn—try adding a few to your training.
As per the statement, Christian is a serial record breaker with over 80 titles to his name currently. And this record sprint was well within his wheelhouse, as he also holds records for:
