From ghost lights to bird suicides : 7 places in India with mysteries that still remain unsolved

India is full of rich history, culture, and natural wonders. Along with this, it also hides some mind-boggling mysteries that go beyond human understanding. Amongst these are a few places that seem to defy the laws of nature and logic. Here are the top 7 most mysterious places in India that will surely send chills down your spine.

2/8

Kongka La Pass, Ladakh

Being situated in the high-altitude regions of Ladakh, Kongka La Pass is a mysterious spot that is said to have experienced UFO sightings as per online reports. This remote area is located near the Indo-China border and has been the subject of numerous UFO-related stories. According to online portals, locals and travellers have reported seeing strange lights in the sky and call them as “flying saucers.” As per media reports units of the Indian Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP) have also previously reported seeing UFOs. With its remote location and secretive nature, Kongka La Pass remains one of the most interesting places in India. Some even consider it to be a hidden UFO base due to its unusual activities, though it remains covered in mystery.

3/8

Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan

Bhangarh Fort in Rajasthan is popularly known for being one of the most haunted places in India. Located on the edge of the Sariska Tiger Reserve, entry to the fort is restricted after sunset due to local folklore warning of paranormal activity. According to legend, a curse was placed on the fort after a failed romance by the fort’s ruler, which led to the downfall of the entire kingdom. The fort has been surrounded by numerous ghost stories and unexplained experiences. Many who have visited the place report feeling uneasy, and some claim to have experienced strange noises and sightings.

4/8

Roopkund Lake, Uttarakhand

Roopkund Lake, situated in the high-altitude mountains of Uttarakhand, is known as “Skeleton Lake” due to the human skeletons that have been found around the lake. The bones are believed to be the remains of people who perished in a violent storm. Despite this, some theories say that they might have been part of a pilgrimage or an ancient burial ritual. The skeletons are visible during the summer months when the ice melts, bringing the eerie remains to the spotlight. The mystery of how and why so many people died in this remote location remains unsolved till date.

5/8

Aleya Ghost Lights, Sunderbans

The Sunderbans are India’s largest mangrove forest, which is not only famous for its tigers but also for the Aleya Ghost Lights, which have puzzled locals for years. According to legends, they are believed to be the spirits of fishermen who tragically died in the perilous waters of the area. These mysterious, glowing lights appear on the marshes at night and often create a frightening and ghostly appearance. Many believe these lights are caused by will-o’-the-wisps, an optical illusion caused by the combustion of gases from decaying organic matter in the marshes. Whether a natural phenomenon or something more supernatural, the lights of the Sundarbans are still a subject of fascination and fear.

6/8

Loktak Lake, Manipur

Loktak Lake in Manipur is one of the most picturesque lakes in India, but it holds a mysterious secret, which are the phumdis, or floating islands. These natural landmasses are made due to the accumulation of vegetation, soil, and organic matter that float on the surface of the lake during different stages of decomposition. The floating islands give the illusion of moving land masses on the water. Locals believe that the islands are sacred, and the lake’s ecosystem supports rare flora and fauna.

7/8

Magnetic Hill, Ladakh

Magnetic Hill in Ladakh is one of the most famous mysterious spots in India, known for its strange gravitational phenomenon. Vehicles that are left out of gear on a certain stretch of the road appear to move uphill, that goes against the laws of gravity. Despite the scientific explanation that it’s an optical illusion caused by the layout of the land, this phenomenon still shocks many. The hill’s magnetic properties have attracted numerous visitors who have been eager to witness the impossible event live. Whether it’s the result of natural geography or something more mysterious, Magnetic Hill remains a hypnotising phenomenon.

8/8

Jatinga, Assam bird suicides

The small village of Jatinga in Assam is known for its unusually scary phenomenon of bird suicides. Every year, between September and November, hundreds of migratory birds fly into the village at night, only to plunge to the ground, in what appears to be a mass suicide. The cause of this strange behaviour is still not fully understood. While some believe that the birds are attracted by the lights or get disoriented by the terrain, the locals attribute this to supernatural reasons. It is this mystery surrounding the “bird suicide” that continues to attract researchers and tourists to this remote village.
