Elon Musk exits DOGE: Who will be the potential successor?
Elon Musk has announced his departure from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under the Trump 2.0 administration, stepping down from his role as the head of the government organization.
On May 28, Musk announced via X, that his time leading President Donald Trump's cost-cutting task force has come "to an end".
He wrote on X, "As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending."
He concluded his post, saying, “The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”
Musk has helped lead the DOGE since its inception this year. As it is well-known now, he was designated as a "special government employee" - which allows him to work a government job for 130 days each year. Counting from Trump's inauguration on 20 January, he was supposed to hit that limit towards the end of May.
Musk thanked Trump for the role in a post on X and said he believed the cost-cutting agency would become a "way of life throughout government".
His departure marks the end of a controversial chapter in federal bureaucracy reform. Musk's "offboarding" as a special government employee would reportedly begin on Wednesday night.
Notably, Musk's exit comes after he criticised Trump's "big, beautiful" bill, which includes multi-trillion dollar tax breaks and a pledge to increase defence spending.
Musk's resignation follows his public criticism of President Donald Trump's latest spending bill, which he described as a "massive" and "detrimental" piece of legislation that undermines efforts to reduce government spending. The bill, which has passed the House and is awaiting Senate approval, is projected to add over $3.3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. Musk argued that this legislation directly contradicts the goals of DOGE, which he led, intending to slash federal spending and eliminate inefficiencies.
With Musk's exit, the inevitable question arises: who will succeed him in leading DOGE? The Trump administration has not yet announced a replacement, but several potential candidates have been identified.
The probable successor:
Vivek Ramaswamy, who co-led DOGE alongside Musk before stepping down to run for Ohio governor, has expressed confidence in DOGE's mission. While he is no longer involved, his initial leadership and vision for the department could influence the selection of a new leader.
Several other senior officials at DOGE might prove as strong contenders for the job. Some of them are:
Tom Krause
Tom Krause, currently serving as the Fiscal Assistant Secretary of the Treasury and CEO of Cloud Software Group, is a prominent figure in the Trump administration's fiscal policy. His dual roles have raised ethical concerns, but his experience in both the private and public sectors could make him a strong candidate to lead DOGE.
Luke Farritor
Luke Farritor, a software engineer with experience at SpaceX and a background in artificial intelligence, has been involved with DOGE. His technical expertise and understanding of government systems could position him as a potential leader for the department.
Marko Elez
Marko Elez, who has held administrator-level access to critical financial infrastructure within the Treasury Department, has been associated with DOGE's initiatives. His involvement in reviewing foreign aid payment files and understanding of federal payment systems might make him a candidate for leading the department.
Amy Gleason
Amy Gleason currently serves as the acting administrator of DOGE. She previously worked at the U.S. Digital Service, the predecessor to DOGE, and has experience in product management. Gleason reports to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and has been involved in the department's operations. Her leadership could provide continuity in the department's mission.
