Earth’s core may be leaking gold: What scientists just discovered

Earth’s core may be leaking gold

In a recent discovery that could change how we understand Earth’s inner layers, scientists have found signs that precious metals like gold might be slowly leaking from the planet’s core. Until now, experts believed the core was completely sealed off from the rest of the Earth. But this new research suggests that the core may not be as isolated as once thought, and could be releasing small amounts of valuable elements over time, challenging long-standing ideas about Earth’s makeup.

The unlikely source of surface metals

According to a TOI report, a research team from Germany’s University of Göttingen has found that volcanic rocks, especially those from Hawaii, contain unusually high amounts of ruthenium-100, a rare isotope usually linked to Earth’s core. This surprising find suggests that material from deep inside the planet might be reaching the surface. Scientists believe this could be happening through mantle plumes– hot columns of rock that rise from the Earth’s interior, possibly carrying precious metals upward over millions of years.

As per reports, the scientists used advanced isotopic analysis on volcanic rocks and discovered unusually high levels of ruthenium-100. This finding supports the idea that Earth’s core may not be as sealed off as previously thought, and that some material from deep within the planet is making its way to the surface.

How are precious metals getting to the surface?

For many years, scientists believed that the Earth’s core was a completely sealed-off zone. During the planet’s early formation, metals like gold, platinum, and iridium– known as siderophile elements– were thought to have sunk into the core because they’re drawn to iron. Since the Earth was molten at the time, these metals naturally settled deep inside, making the core seem unreachable and cut off from the surface.

However, recent findings suggest that some of these metals might actually be making their way up from the core. As per reports, scientists believe that mantle plumes– columns of superheated rock rising from the boundary between the core and the mantle– could be carrying these elements upwards. When these plumes reach the Earth's crust, volcanic activity may bring this deep material to the surface.

What does this mean for Earth’s geological processes?

This new discovery is reshaping what we know about how the Earth works from the inside. It suggests there’s more connection between the core and the mantle than scientists once believed. For a long time, the core was thought to be completely cut off from the rest of the planet, but this finding challenges that idea. As per reports, the movement of gold and other rare metals upward through the mantle could also help explain why certain volcanic areas, like Hawaii, are richer in these valuable elements.

A major step forward for Earth sciences

Although only tiny amounts of these metals reach the surface, the discovery has big implications for geologists and mineral experts. It could lead to new ways of understanding how the Earth’s inner activity influences where valuable elements end up on the surface. While mining gold directly from the core isn’t realistic, this research gives scientists important clues about how precious metals move through the Earth over time.

The research study has been published in the journal Nature.
