Special habitat in Death Valley

The Devils Hole pupfish lives solely in Devils Hole, a Nevada cavern roughly 22m long and 3.5m wide, plunging nearly 150m deep. They stick to the top 15-24m, creating the smallest vertebrate habitat worldwide. Constant 33°C water and low oxygen challenge survival, with a shallow shelf for feeding on algae.

World's rarest fish population

The total number of fish ranged around 191 in spring 2024, the highest in 25 years, but plunged to 38 in 2025 after earthquakes disrupted algae food and eggs, said a BBC wildlife report. This annual species lives 10-14 months, spawning year-round with numbers peaking in spring and fall. Low egg survival keeps numbers. Precarious.




After the earthquakes, biologists quickly activated their preparedness plan by releasing captive-bred pupfish and providing extra food to support the population until the algae recover. Located within Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, Devils Hole has also endured flash floods, but these interventions have helped manage immediate risks. Predators such as diving beetles continue to pose a threat to the rare fish population.

Ancient isolation mystery

Studies suggest the pupfish have been isolated for 60,000 years since the cavern formed, or possibly just thousands of years through underground water flows or birds. They lack pelvic fins, a trait linked to their evolution from C. nevadensis.

Is there any connection to human evolution?

No direct descent, but pupfish show vertebrate adaptability from fish ancestors millions of years ago.
