ChatGPT helps Delhi resident catch scammer red-handed: “He started begging me” – shocking twist goes viral
Conversations about scam messages are usually straightforward, but a recent story shared on Reddit has taken a very different route and quickly caught public attention. A Delhi resident narrated how a routine fraudulent message unexpectedly turned into a detailed countermove using ChatGPT. The post, titled “Used ChatGPT to locate a scammer and made him beg me”, has now become a talking point for the way the Reddit user handled the situation step by step.
The message that raised suspicion
In the post, the Reddit user wrote that it all started when someone messaged them on Facebook while pretending to be their college senior. The person claimed to be an IAS officer and said that a “CRPF officer friend” was being transferred and selling high-end appliances at very low prices.
They explained that something felt wrong because their real senior already had their number. After checking directly with the actual person on WhatsApp, they understood what was going on. They wrote, “It was fraud.”
Instead of blocking the fake account right away, the Reddit user continued to observe. Soon after, a different number contacted them. This profile had a photo of someone in an army uniform and repeatedly pushed them to make the payment through a QR code. The user wrote that the tone became more urgent the moment money was mentioned. As they explained, “This felt immediately wrong.”
Using ChatGPT to build a trap page
While pretending to struggle with scanning the QR code, the Reddit user opened ChatGPT and asked it to help them create a simple webpage that looked like a payment upload page but was designed to capture information from the visitor.
They wrote that they “fed the AI a prompt for a simple, functional webpage” and received the code quickly. After hosting it, they shared the link with the scammer and told them that uploading the QR code there would “expedite the payment process.”
The scammer clicked the link without hesitation. The Reddit user wrote that the page immediately sent them the scammer’s GPS coordinates, IP address, and even a front-camera snapshot. They then sent the scammer the same details, including the photo, which changed the entire tone of the interaction.
Panic calls and requests for mercy
According to the post, multiple calls began coming in from different numbers. They were all from the same scammer, who had gone into panic mode. The Reddit user wrote that the scammer kept pleading with them and promised to stop this activity, repeatedly asking for forgiveness.
Reddit users react to the story
The incident drew a strong reaction from the community. One user commented, “Mad respect. I am going to use this. In fact, make this open source. Host it somewhere so that we can do it too.” Many others said it was one of the most satisfying scam reversals they had come across on the platform.
The post has led to wider conversations about how AI tools are being used by everyday internet users in unexpected ways. The Reddit user also mentioned how the moment felt after exposing the scammer, writing, “the satisfaction of stealing from a thief is crazy.” Their story has now become an example of how people are using digital tools to deal with fraudulent behaviour more confidently.
