A British mountaineer named Kenton Cool, who has scaled Mount Everest 17 times, has reported a decline in the amount of snow at the summit. Cool says that the mountain exhibits less snow than it used to, and he attributes this to climate crisis or environmental changes. He explains that the mountain had a lot more snow in the early and mid-2000s, but it has become rockier in recent years.
Many scientific reports have shown that global average temperatures in the Himalayas have increased significantly in the 21st century compared to previous years.
The Instagram page “Now This News” shared a video from Cool's 16th climb to the summit of Mount Everest in 2021 in which he made observations about the amount of snow. The video has received over a million views, with many users expressing their concern about the impact of climate change on the planet. One disgruntled user expressed frustration with people who do not believe in environmental science, while others acknowledged the alarming reality of the situation and urged action to be taken to protect the environment.
“If you go back to the early mid-2000s there used to be a lot of snow. There’s a general trend for the mountain to be more rocky and less snow. But it changes year after year. It could be any reason, I mean, it could be global warming, environmental change,” Cool says in the video.
Since the video was uploaded, it has received more than a million views on Instagram, with thousands of likes and comments expressing users’ concerns.
One user said “This is alarming the earth telling us to stop what we doin' but we don’t!”. While another user said rhetorically “It happened to the mammoths gonna happen to us too - just embrace death y'all”.
