Incredible birds that change their colour with the seasons

We usually think of seasonal changes in terms of the weather, what we eat, or the clothes we wear. But in nature, some changes happen in ways that are deeper and more subtle. Most birds keep the same feathers all year, but a few species actually change their feather colours with the seasons. This isn’t just for looks– it’s all about survival.

These colour changes help birds adapt to their environment, stay safe from predators, or show that they’re ready to mate. Sometimes the change is very obvious, other times it’s so subtle you might miss it unless you’re paying close attention. Either way, it’s a clear sign of how well birds adjust to the world around them.

Here’s a look at five bird species that change their colours with the seasons– and why these changes are important for their survival and behaviour.

2/9

Snowy Owl

The Snowy Owl is famous for its bright white feathers in winter, which help it blend into snowy surroundings. But this white look doesn’t stay all year. When the snow melts and the tundra reveals rocks and sparse plants in summer, especially females and young owls develop darker markings on their feathers. This helps them blend in better with the summer landscape. It’s a subtle change, but an important one for their survival.

3/9

Ruff

The Ruff is known for its dramatic change during the breeding season. Most of the year, it looks like a regular wading bird with plain brown feathers. But in spring, male Ruffs grow bright, decorative feathers around their necks in colours like black, white, rust, and even gold. These flashy feathers help attract mates. After the breeding season, the birds lose these showy feathers and go back to their normal, less noticeable look.

4/9

Bohemian Waxwing

The Bohemian Waxwing doesn’t have big colour changes, but it still adjusts its look with the seasons. In winter, its feathers are a smooth mix of grey, peach, and brown, helping it blend in with bare trees and snowy backgrounds. As breeding season approaches, some features– like the red tips on its wings and the shape of its crest– become more distinct. These subtle changes help the bird attract mates and show it’s ready for the season.

5/9

Long-tailed Duck

The Long-tailed Duck is one of the few sea ducks that looks very different in summer and winter. In winter, males have white and black feathers with long tails that are easy to notice. When summer comes and it’s time to breed, their feathers turn brown and grey to help them hide in the tundra where they nest. Female ducks also change colour, but their change is softer to help them stay hidden while nesting.

6/9

Scarlet Tanager

In the warmer months, the male Scarlet Tanager stands out with its bright red body and black wings. But after the breeding season, this bright colour fades. Before it begins its long migration, the male changes its feathers to a yellowish-green, similar to the female. This dull colour helps the bird stay safe during its journey. Even female Scarlet Tanagers show a slight colour change in spring, proving that seasonal changes aren’t just for males.

7/9

Rock Ptarmigan

The Rock Ptarmigan changes its feathers with the seasons to blend into its surroundings. In winter, it turns white to hide in the snow, and in spring, its feathers shift to brown and grey to match the rocks. This helps protect it from predators. During breeding, the male also grows a bright red patch above its eyes.

8/9

Snow Bunting

The Snow Bunting changes colour with the seasons. In winter, the males are mostly white with black on their wings, standing out against the snow. When breeding season comes, their feathers turn brown to blend in with the rocky ground. Female Snow Buntings also change from light to darker colours. This helps them stay safe and shows they are ready to mate and nest. The Snow Bunting’s colour change is both helpful and beautiful.

9/9

Scarlet Tanager

Scarlet Tanagers are bright red with black wings in summer, making them easy to spot in the forest. In autumn, their colour changes to a duller olive-yellow, helping them hide among the fall leaves. Female tanagers stay greenish-yellow all year but get a little brighter in spring. The bright red colour of males helps them attract mates, while the dull autumn colours protect them from predators during migration. This colour change helps them stay safe and find partners.
