7 surprising snake facts you probably didn’t know

Snakes are among the most talked-about reptiles, and yet, much of what we hear about them is limited to a few familiar facts– they shed their skin, some are venomous, and many are feared. But there’s a lot more to these majestic creatures than what’s commonly known. They function in ways that are very different from humans and many other creatures. Over time, they’ve developed traits that aren’t just unusual– but are also cleverly built for survival. Here are some snake facts that don’t usually make headlines but are definitely worth knowing.

2/8

They sense sound without ears

Snakes don’t have external ears, but they can still sense sound. Instead of hearing the way we do, they pick up vibrations through the ground. These vibrations travel through their lower jawbones to their inner ears, helping them detect movement nearby.

3/8

They replace their teeth often

Many snakes lose teeth while catching or swallowing their prey, but it doesn’t stop them from eating. That’s because their bodies keep growing new teeth all the time. Some snakes can lose and regrow hundreds of teeth throughout their lives.

4/8

Some species pretend to be dead

Some snakes deal with danger by pretending to be dead. They might stay completely still, roll onto their backs, and even release a bad odour to seem less appealing to predators. This clever trick often helps them avoid being attacked.

5/8

‘Blind’ snakes still detect light

Certain species referred to as blind snakes have very limited vision, yet they are not completely blind. Their eyes can still pick up changes in light and shadow, which helps them move through underground or dim environments where they typically live.

6/8

They can survive without food for months

Some snakes can survive for months without eating. This is because they have a very slow metabolism, especially when they’re hibernating or not very active. During these times, they live off the energy stored in their bodies.

7/8

Sea snakes have a way to handle salt

Surviving in the ocean requires special adaptations. Some sea snakes have developed salt-excreting glands, which help them get rid of the excess salt they absorb from seawater. This allows them to stay hydrated and live in marine environments.

8/8

Females can reproduce without males

In rare cases, female snakes can reproduce on their own through a process called parthenogenesis. This means they can produce offspring without mating, and the young are exact genetic copies of the mother.
