7 amazing birds that can swim like Penguins

We all know how skilled penguins are for their underwater agility, but, to our surprise, they are not the only birds that can swim remarkably underwater. Several sea birds use their wings and feet to fly beneath the waves in search of food (fish and other prey). Now, scroll down to have a look at some of the most fascinating birds that have mastered life both in the air and under the sea.

2/8

Shearwaters

They are agile sea birds that combine gliding over the water with skilled underwater swimming. They use their wings to help steer while diving below the surface to catch small fish and squids. They are found across oceans worldwide and are known for their long migrations.

3/8

Puffins

Puffins may look clumsy on land, but they’re excellent swimmers in the water. Their wings are adapted to swim underwater, helping them chase small fish. They dive to depths of up to 200 feet, using their wings to help them dive deeper.

4/8

Cormorants

Cormorants are expert divers, capable of swimming at depths of up to 100 feet. Their bodies are built for diving, with webbed feet for paddling and long necks to help them dive and maneuver. They often hunt in shallow coastal waters or lakes.

5/8

Loons

Loons are amazing swimmers that dive deep into the water in search of fish. With their strong legs positioned towards the rear of their bodies, they are more suited for swimming than walking, which helps them to move efficiently underwater.

6/8

Common Murre

A skilled bird that uses its stubby wings to propel itself through the sea. Mostly found in the North Atlantic and the North Pacific, these seabirds can dive over 150 feet deep in search of their prey.

7/8

Auks (Razorbills and Guillemots)

They are remarkable underwater swimmers. Flapping their wings like penguins to propel themselves through water, chasing their prey with speed and precision. These birds thrive along rocky coasts of the North Atlantic, often nesting on sea cliffs.

8/8

Diving Petrel

These are compact sea birds that can easily flap their wings to “fly” underwater, much like penguins. They can dive deep to catch small fish and crustaceans. Found especially around New Zealand and the Sub-Antarctic islands.
