5 non-venomous snakes in the world



Snakes continue to be one of the most misunderstood creatures in the animal world. In India and globally, fear and misinformation often lead people to assume that all snakes are harmful. But the reality is quite the opposite. A significant majority of snake species– close to 85% – are non-venomous and pose no danger to humans.


These harmless reptiles play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. They help keep rodent populations under control, protect crops, and even reduce the spread of diseases that pests can cause. Yet, because of mistaken identity or lack of awareness, they are often killed on sight.


Here are five kinds of non-venomous snakes that are safe to be around and important for keeping their ecosystems healthy.

Green Snakes



Found mainly in grassy areas and forests, green snakes are known for their bright green colour that helps them blend into foliage. They are non-aggressive, rarely bite, and feed mostly on insects and small invertebrates. Their calm nature and useful diet make them helpful for natural pest control, especially in gardens and farms.

Hognose Snakes



Hognose snakes, native to parts of the Americas, are known for their unique snout and dramatic defence tactics. They puff up, hiss, and sometimes play dead when threatened. While some species produce mild toxins for subduing prey, these do not affect humans. Their behaviour may look alarming, but these snakes are completely non-venomous.

Gopher Snakes




Gopher snakes often get mistaken for rattlesnakes due to similar markings and defensive postures. However, they are not venomous and use bluffing as a defence strategy. Found in North America, they are powerful constrictors that keep rodent numbers in check. Their role in pest control is significant, especially in agricultural zones.

Racers


Racers are slender, quick-moving snakes seen across various parts of the Americas. They are known for their speed and alert behaviour. These snakes are non-venomous and prefer to escape confrontation. They usually feed on frogs, insects, and even smaller snakes, helping maintain biodiversity in their habitats.

Rat Snakes




One of the most familiar non-venomous snakes in India, the rat snake– or dhaman– is often spotted in villages, fields, and even near urban settlements. Despite its size, it is harmless and avoids humans. These snakes primarily feed on rats, making them extremely valuable to farmers. Their presence near grain storage areas is often a sign of natural rodent management.
