5 lesser-known dangerous animals around the world

The natural world is home to some of the most fascinating and yet deadly animals. While we often think of large predators when we talk about dangerous animals, some of the deadliest creatures are much smaller and might even surprise people.

These animals have evolved various deadly strategies, from venom and poisoning to spreading lethal diseases, which make them formidable threats to humans worldwide.

Here are 5 dangerous animals across the world

2/6

Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are considered the world's most dangerous animals, responsible for approximately 725,000 deaths annually, according to BBC Wildlife. Only female mosquitoes bite, as they require blood to nourish their eggs. They spread diseases such as malaria, causing the majority of deaths. Mosquitoes also transmit dengue, yellow fever, and Japanese encephalitis, posing significant global health concerns. Preventative measures include mosquito nets and insecticides for travelers to endemic areas.

3/6

Box jellyfish

The box jellyfish is one of the most venomous marine animals globally. Its sting can cause terrifying pain, cardiac arrest, and death in humans. Found mainly in the waters of the Indo-Pacific region, it has tentacles lined with thousands of nematocysts that inject venom when touched. Despite its deadly nature, deaths are rare with prompt treatment and awareness.

4/6

Freshwater snails

Freshwater snails act as intermediate hosts for parasitic flatworms that cause schistosomiasis or "snail fever," which kills about 200,000 people annually, according to a Discover Wildlife report. The parasites leave the snails and infect humans via contaminated freshwater, penetrating the skin. Schistosomiasis is considered the second most socioeconomically devastating parasitic disease after malaria.

5/6

Saltwater crocodile

Saltwater crocodiles are the largest living reptiles and highly aggressive predators. Known for their strength and territorial nature, they can attack humans who venture near their habitat. They inhabit the coastal regions of Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. Despite their fearsome image, crocodile attacks on humans are infrequent but often fatal.

6/6

Saw-scaled viper

The saw-scaled viper, with its aggressive behaviour and potent venom, causes the highest snakebite mortality worldwide. Unlike the more toxic but shy inland taipan, this viper’s bold nature brings it into more frequent contact with humans in densely populated regions. Its venom causes severe tissue damage and potentially fatal systemic effects.
