10 saddest countries in the world and India’s rank is…

According to the World Happiness Report 2025, despite the world's progress in its health, technology, and connectivity, happiness seems to be a far-fetched dream for most countries. The World Happiness Report 2025, published by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network in association with the Wellbeing Research Centre of Oxford and Gallup, ranks 147 countries based on how satisfied their residents feel. Based on the recent report, these nations are at the bottom of the rankings based on a mixture of war, poverty, corruption, and public service system failure:

2/14

Afghanistan (147th)

Happiness Score: ~1.4/10
Afghanistan continues to be the saddest country globally, facing years of war, human rights violations, and economic downfall, particularly after the Taliban came back to power.

3/14

Sierra Leone (146th)

Persevering poverty, tenuous healthcare, and political instability persist to undermine the health of its citizens.

4/14

Lebanon (145th)

Overwhelmed by financial collapse and governmental impasse, Lebanon is beset by widespread distrust, inflation, and youth migration

5/14

Malawi (144th)

Low-income, food-insecure, and poorly developed, a country suffers.

6/14

Zimbabwe (143rd)

Mass discontent is fueled by chronic inflation, unemployment, and political repression.

7/14

Botswana (142nd)

Although relatively stable, Botswana has increasing inequality and lingering poverty

8/14

Democratic Republic of Congo (141st)

One of the most troubled areas on the planet, beset by displacement and health emergencies.

9/14

Yemen (140th)

Famine, war, and humanitarian catastrophes transform Yemen into one of the least stable and unhappiest countries in the world.

10/14

Comoros (139th)

Poor island nation beset by poverty and poor access to healthcare and education.

11/14

Lesotho (138th)

Systemic poverty and high HIV rates, and low life expectancy persist within this Southern African country.

12/14

Where does India stand?

India is ranked 118th out of 147 in the World Happiness Report 2025—a slight betterment from its position in 2024 as the 126th saddest country. Though not one of the 10 unhappiest countries, India's happiness rating lags behind several South Asian nations.

13/14

India's Scorecard:

Average happiness score: 4.389 (out of 10)
GDP per capita rank: 93rd
Social support: 128th
Freedom to make life choices: 23rd
Generosity: 51st
Perceptions of corruption: 56th

14/14

Why does it matter?

The report extends beyond wealth, pointing to the importance of social cohesion, trust in institutions, and emotional well-being. Nations such as Finland, Denmark, and Iceland, which lead the happiness index, demonstrate that sustained investment in social welfare, freedom, and honest government reaps rewards in the emotional well-being of their people.
India's performance shows a paradox—moderate economic growth but a weaker sense of social support and trust. If these underlying problems are fixed, the country would be able to rise higher in future happiness rankings.
