Jack the Ripper

Jack the Ripper terrorized the Whitechapel district of London in 1888. Known for his gruesome methods, he targeted female prostitutes, mutilating their bodies in a manner that suggested a deep understanding of human anatomy. Despite numerous investigations, his identity remains unknown. The Ripper’s crimes were characterized by letters sent to the police, taunting them and claiming responsibility for the murders. His case remains one of the most famous unsolved mysteries in criminal history.

Ted Bundy

Ted Bundy was an American serial killer who confessed to murdering 30 women across several states during the 1970s. Bundy was known for his charm and good looks, which he used to lure his victims. He often pretended to be injured or in need of help to gain their trust. Bundy was executed in the electric chair in Florida on January 24, 1989. His case is notable for his escape from custody twice and his subsequent killing spree.

Jeffrey Dahmer

Jeffrey Dahmer, also known as the Milwaukee Cannibal, was responsible for the murders of 17 young men between 1978 and 1991. Dahmer’s crimes involved rape, dismemberment, necrophilia, and cannibalism. He was arrested in 1991 when one of his intended victims managed to escape and alert the police. Dahmer was sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms but was killed by a fellow inmate in 1994. His case remains one of the most disturbing in American history.

John Wayne Gacy

John Wayne Gacy, known as the Killer Clown, murdered at least 33 young men and boys in Illinois during the 1970s. Gacy lured his victims to his home, where he would sexually assault and strangle them. He buried many of his victims in the crawl space beneath his house. Gacy was arrested in 1978 and executed by lethal injection in 1994. His case is infamous for the sheer number of victims and the gruesome nature of his crimes.

Zodiac Killer

The Zodiac Killer operated in Northern California during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He is confirmed to have killed five people, though he claimed to have murdered 37. The Zodiac targeted young couples and a lone cab driver, sending taunting letters and cryptograms to the press and police. His identity remains unknown, making him one of the most enigmatic and feared serial killers in history. The Zodiac’s letters included ciphers, some of which remain unsolved to this day.

Richard Ramirez

Richard Ramirez, also known as the Night Stalker, terrorized Los Angeles and San Francisco between 1984 and 1985. Ramirez was convicted of 13 murders, as well as numerous counts of sexual assault and burglary. He was known for his satanic rituals and left pentagrams at many of his crime scenes. Ramirez was captured in 1985 after being recognized by residents who subdued him until the police arrived. He was sentenced to death but died of cancer in 2013.

Ed Gein

Ed Gein, the Butcher of Plainfield, was a murderer and body snatcher whose crimes inspired several horror films, including “Psycho” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” Gein was arrested in 1957 after the discovery of human remains in his home. He confessed to killing two women and exhuming corpses from local graveyards to create trophies and keepsakes. Gein was declared insane and spent the rest of his life in a mental institution, where he died in 1984.

Gary Ridgway

Gary Ridgway, known as the Green River Killer, was convicted of 49 murders, making him one of the most prolific serial killers in U.S. history. Ridgway targeted young women, many of whom were sex workers, in Washington state during the 1980s and 1990s. He was arrested in 2001 and avoided the death penalty by providing detailed confessions and helping locate the remains of his victims. Ridgway is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Dennis Rader

Dennis Rader, also known as the BTK Killer, murdered 10 people in Kansas between 1974 and 1991. Rader’s moniker, BTK, stood for “Bind, Torture, Kill,” which described his method of operation. He taunted the police and media with letters detailing his crimes. Rader was arrested in 2005 after a series of communications with the police led to his capture. He was sentenced to 10 consecutive life terms and is currently incarcerated.

Albert Fish

Albert Fish, also known as the Gray Man, was a child rapist and cannibal who claimed to have murdered several children in the early 20th century. Fish was arrested in 1934 after sending a letter to the family of one of his victims, detailing the murder. He was convicted of the murder of Grace Budd and executed in the electric chair in 1936. Fish’s crimes were particularly heinous due to his sadistic tendencies and the young age of his victims.
