Why crocodiles are shifting from riverbanks to sunbathing on jet skis and kayaks

Seeing a crocodile on a jet ski or resting on a kayak seems to be a surreal experience, and the first thing that comes to one’s mind is how it got there and what could have driven a crocodile to rest on such an unusual place.However, this isn't an isolated case, and in recent times, these have been observed with greater frequency, especially in regions where human activity intersects with nature. Though it seems unusual, this behaviour isn't random, and it's connected with the way crocodiles survive and how their environment is changing.They are ectothermic, which means they need external sources of heat for their survival. This is because, unlike other mammals, they are not capable of generating their own body heat. Therefore, sunbathing is a significant part of their routine.The sun is essential for their survival because it provides them with the required amount of heat. This helps them maintain their metabolic activities, such as digestion, moving, and hunting. Otherwise, they would be sluggish, and their survival would be at stake.You might have often seen crocodiles resting motionless on their backs, jaws open, during sunbathing. This is their instinct, which helps them regulate their temperature. This is also a natural way of shedding extra heat from their bodies.In other words, sunbathing is not an option for crocodiles; it is a necessity.One might think it strange that a crocodile would want to get on a jet ski or a kayak, but once you think about the needs of a crocodile, you can understand why this behaviour makes sense.Crocodiles are used to basking in the sun on riverbanks, muddy shores, or quiet shores along the coast. But in a lot of places, these safe havens are becoming scarce due to human development.A jet ski or a kayak, though unintentionally, offers a haven for a crocodile because these watercraft are on the water, which makes them warm, and they are stable, which makes them safe for a crocodile.Though this behaviour might be strange for a human, for a crocodile, this behaviour makes sense.One of the main reasons for this behaviour is the changing habitats. The coastline is being developed with docks and sea walls. This reduces the available undisturbed habitats where crocodiles would naturally bask.The crocodiles have to adjust their behaviour. They no longer depend on the disappearing shoreline. They now depend on what is available in their surroundings.A stationary kayak or jet ski is available and near the water. This is an ideal alternative for a crocodile. It is available, elevated, and near the water. It is an ideal spot for a crocodile.This shift is not about preference. It is about survival in a changing landscape.This behaviour has not only been witnessed casually but has also been included in scientific research. Researchers at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute published a study, “American crocodiles on jet skis”, in the Wildlife Society Bulletin, examining the interactions between American crocodiles and man-made objects, including watercraft.As part of this study, individual crocodiles were fitted with satellite transmitters. Satellite transmitters assist researchers in the study of the migration of species and their adaptation to their environment.A case of an American crocodile resting on a kayak was recorded in Broward County, Florida (February 2024). As this was part of a satellite study on American crocodiles, researchers were able to confirm this and assert that this was not an isolated case but part of a larger behaviour pattern.Despite how menacing it may look, a crocodile lying on a jet ski or a kayak is not an aggressive behaviour.Usually, a crocodile is just saving energy and keeping warm. As a species, crocodiles are very careful and always try to avoid any contact with humans. However, they do get involved in incidents, usually when they are provoked.We must understand this difference. What we perceive as a menacing behaviour is, in reality, a normal behaviour for a crocodile, only performed in an unusual location.The rise of such reports indicates a larger environmental truth. As human development continues to change the natural environment, wildlife is obliged to adapt.Some species are having difficulty adjusting, but others, like crocodiles, are showing incredible adaptability. They are not altering their fundamental nature, but using it in different surroundings.What was once happening on quiet riverbanks is now happening on floating leisure items.At the end of it all, a crocodile sunbathing on a kayak is not doing anything out of the ordinary. It is simply looking for warmth, conserving its energy, and surviving, as it has always done.The difference now is the environment it is in.These events, while unexpected, are not simply unusual sightings. They are a stark reminder of how close human space and wildlife space are now. They are a reminder that adaptation is not always dramatic, but sometimes as simple as a crocodile choosing a different place to rest.
