Squirrel scare at Rajasthan's University, bites several people on campus: Why squirrel bites are harmful and how to keep them away from home and garden
In the university of Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur, a rare incident has occurred. In the Arts College of this university, it has come to knowledge that there is a squirrel which has been biting people. As many as 18-20 people have been affected by the bites of this squirrel. Additionally, the squirrel has shown very irregular and unpredictable behavior concerning attacking people.
This incident stands out because it is rare for a squirrel to be harmful to people or animals; moreover, the squirrel is shy by nature. This is a characteristic shared by any other wild animal. Squirrels may become aggressive in case they sense any threat from their surroundings or are ill, or in case they get used to human contact.
While a squirrel bite seems insignificant, it is associated with health risks that should not be underestimated. The animal’s teeth can penetrate the skin quite easily, allowing harmful bacteria to infect the wound. It is likely to become red, swollen, and painful if there is no proper wound care. Occasionally, the squirrel can transmit certain diseases such as Rabies or Leptospirosis, although the chances are relatively low. Nevertheless, one should clean the wound and consult a doctor in case of possible health risks.
The event also demonstrates how quickly human space can become appealing for wildlife animals. Accessible sources of food, trash, or any form of accommodation may attract the squirrel closer to residential areas and backyards. Once the animal feels safe in this territory, it will keep returning to it and behave more confidently.
Their avoidance involves less coercion and more preventive methods. Cleanliness, proper waste management, and abstention from feeding can go a long way in preventing contact with them. Blocking entry routes to houses through wall holes, ceiling holes, and attic holes makes it impossible for them to nest inside your house. In a garden setting, one can use non-harmful ways to prevent them from settling, such as barricading their route or using odoriferous sprays.
* Immediately clean the bite area with soap and water
* Disinfect the bitten area
* Consult a doctor, particularly if there is an open wound
However, the example of the incident that took place at Mohanlal Sukhadia University is a warning that humans need to understand that they cannot take any animal for granted. It was simply a matter of taking precautions, like keeping one’s distance, that would have sufficed.

How to avoid such situations
The event also demonstrates how quickly human space can become appealing for wildlife animals.
