Dinosaurs found in India: The giant creatures that once roamed the subcontinent

Several millions of years ago, before the existence of modern cities, forests, rivers, and many other things in India, there used to be massive dinosaurs walking across the subcontinent. India might not be the first country which comes to mind when talking about dinosaurs. However, the country has a rich prehistoric past. Fossils unearthed from different areas in India, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, show that there were many large meat-eaters and plant-eaters in the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Such fossils have greatly contributed to the understanding of dinosaurs' evolution in Gondwana. There are at least five interesting dinosaurs in India's prehistory.

2/7

Rajasaurus – 'royal lizard' predator

One of the most well-known dinosaurs in India is Rajasaurus. As evident from its name, which can be translated as "royal lizard," this species belongs to meat-eaters. Fossils of the dinosaur were found in Gujarat. According to experts, it lived roughly 67 million years ago and could be considered the main predator in its environment. The uniqueness of the creature was a horn-like protrusion on the head, which distinguished Rajasaurus among theropods.

3/7

Barapasaurus – one of the largest long-necked dinosaurs

Another impressive dinosaur found in India is the gigantic Barapasaurus. This herbivore is characterized by its large size and long neck. According to scientists, the fossils found in Telangana prove that Barapasaurus lived during the early Jurassic era. It probably reached an impressive length of 14+ meters. The name of the dinosaur could be translated as "big-legged lizard" due to its large limbs.

4/7

Isisaurus – the giant herbivore

Isisaurus previously named Titanosaurus colberti was another giant dinosaur found in India. This animal belonged to titanosaurs and was distinguished by its massive body and long neck. Fossils discovered in India suggest that Isisaurus survived until almost the end of the dinosaurs' existence. In contrast to other titanosaurs, it had an upright structure of the neck.

5/7

Indosuchus – mystery meat-eater

This carnivorous dinosaur is believed to have existed in India during the late Cretaceous era. Scientists came to the conclusion based on fossils found in India. Indosuchus was a powerful predator, although there is not enough information available about it due to an insufficient number of remains.

6/7

Jainosaurus – titanosaur giant

Jainosaurus was a herbivorous titanosaur discovered in India. The dinosaur is distinguished by its large neck; fossils of the creature were found in Madhya Pradesh. Similarly to other titanosaurs, Jainosaurus moved in search of vegetation.
