How you can fix dehydrated skin this winter

Dehydrated skin is a temporary condition caused by a lack of water in the skin. Even people with oily or combination skin types can experience dehydration. The first sign of dehydrated skin is an uncomfortable feeling of tightness, which is different from that caused by dryness, which lacks oil, rather than water. A stretched skin, particularly after cleansing, could be due to dehydration.

Dehydrated skin also appears dull and lacks the radiance associated with well-hydrated skin. It can emphasize fine lines, especially around the eyes and forehead. When the skin is hydrated, it looks plumper and smoother.

Dehydrated skin often experiences an increase in sensitivity because the skin barrier, which protects against irritants and allergens, can become compromised, making your skin may react more to skincare products, environmental factors, or even touch.

How to fix this?

1. Use a gentle, hydrating cleanser: When dealing with dehydrated skin, avoid harsh, foaming cleansers, which can strip natural moisture. Opt for a gentle, hydrating cleanser that leaves skin feeling soft.

2. Incorporate hydrating ingredients: Humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin are excellent for pulling moisture into the skin. Apply a hydrating serum after cleansing to provide a boost of water directly to your skin cells.

3. Don’t skip the moisturiser: Even though dehydrated skin needs water, it’s essential to lock in that hydration with a good moisturiser. Look for ingredients like ceramides and fatty acids that help repair and reinforce the skin barrier.

4. Drink plenty of water and eat hydrating foods: Aim to drink enough water daily and eat foods with high water content, like cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges.

5. Protect against environmental stressors: Sun, wind, and air conditioning can all contribute to dehydration. Always use a sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection and consider using a humidifier if you spend long hours in air-conditioned rooms.
