Music Review: Venky Mama

The album is a mixed bag.
Album:

Venky Mama

Genre: Tollywood

The OST of Venky Mama is a short and sweet one wih four songs composed by

Thaman S

. The film, which hit the screens this friday, is directed by Bobby and stars

Venkatesh

, Naga Chaitanya, Payal Rajput and Raashi Khanna. First in line is the title song, Venky Mama, which has vocals by Sri Krishna and lyrics by Ramajogayya Sastry. The song begins with a beautiful folk-style solo by Mohana Bhogaraju, and goes on to deliver a peppy number that has become a crowd favourite since its release. The lyrics talk of the beautiful relationship that Naga Chaitanya’s character shares with that of Venkatesh. While Sri Krishna does a good enough job with the vocals, it is Thaman’s energetic music that stands out in this one.

Next up is Anurag Kulkarni and Nandita Jyothi’s

Nuvvu Nenu

, with lyrics by Shree Mani. For some reason, the romantic number has used the typical Tenglish lingo that just doesn’t sound right. Even the music could only be passed as plain okay. Surprisingly, the vocals have an old-school charm that seems to do some good for this generic ‘romantic yet fun’ number.

Yennallakko

is yet another romantic number in the album, which has vocals by Prudhvi Chandra and some additional lines sung by Thaman himself. The song is a retro-style one, with Shree Mani’s lyrics telling us how protagonist has fallen in love after a long time. The lyrics are fun, while the music makes it all the more delightful to listen.

Prudhvi does a good job with the vocals, injecting just enough oomph to make it work without going overboard. This one’s a winner. Last on the album is the mass, dance number

Coca Cola Pepsi

, with Aditi Bhavaraju, Ramya Behara, Simha and Hanuman. This one is a typical Tollywood mass number which has nothing new to offer, even if the lyrics by Kasarla Shyam are customised to suit the situation. With lyrics like, “Coca cola pepsi, ee mama alludu sexy, attari intikesi, chal ekkedama taxi,” it’s really hard to win.

All in all, the album of Venky Mama is a mixed bag. While Thaman is a lot more subtle with his music than he usually is, only two numbers manage to work — Venky Mama and Yennallakko. Nuvvu Nenu is good enough for a one-time listen, mostly because of its cuteness. Coca Cola Pepsi is something that should be approached with caution.
