Sai Sushanth turns hero with a romcom-meets-fantasy flick

made his debut as the charming and sophisticated Karthik, aka Jubilee Hills, in his debut film Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi (ENE), he took everyone by surprise, holding his own amidst a brilliant cast. yet, he had to wait for over a year before he found the next film he wanted to be part of. That wait ended with Raghavendra Varma’s Bombhaat, which will see Sushanth play the solo lead, as against his debut film which had an ensemble cast. “I’ve waited for this film for a while now, so I’m grateful for this opportunity,” he says.

So, what made him say yes finally? “Well, it’s a romantic comedy with some sci-fi elements as well, so that’s something I am excited about. And, the film has two heroines —

and Chandini Chowdary,” he quips, adding, “On a serious note, the script and my character drew me to this film. I play a final year college student who isn’t very lucky. He’s a happy-go-lucky guy, but he’s put in a situation he is unable to control. I had a lot of fun playing this role.”

Apart from the fun he had on set with co-stars Simran and Chandini, it was the experience of working with veterans that Sushanth cherishes most. “Sharing the screen with stalwarts like Tanikella Bharani and Makarand Deshpande was like a dream come true.... I learnt so much just being around both of them,” he says.

Sushanth recently met with the ENE team, sparking rumours that a sequel is in the offing. he’s careful not to reveal much about it though. “I can’t confirm or deny that news at this point. I haven’t said yes to anything yet, because I want to work only in unique films, which have a narrative that excites me.” for a one-film-old actor, some would say he’s being a tad too choosy. but Sushanth is clear about his priorities. “My first film changed everything for me. People now recognise me wherever I go. when I’m hanging out with my friends, they come tell me that they like the way I act. it feels great to have your work appreciated, and I want to keep doing good work.”
