Ruler review highlights: A shockingly mediocre fare

Anybody who knows Balakrishna’s brand of entertainment and has seen the trailer of his latest potboiler Ruler, know exactly what to expect from it. But even if you leave your brains at home and set the lowest possible expectations from this film,

is bound to frustrate you to no end.

The film begins with Sarojini Naidu (Jayasudha) coming across Dharma (Balakrishna), who had met with an accident and had suffered multiple stab wounds. The next minute, the two are in the ICU with Sarojini facing a serious threat to her life. But when someone attempts to kill her, Dharma miraculously wakes up from his coma and saves her. Sarojini is so grateful that she raises him as her own son and makes him the chairman of her group of companies. With his

, he becomes Arjun Prasad. He travels in choppers and romances Harika (Sonal Chauhan), the chairman of a rival company. His mother tries everything in her power to keep his past from him, but it’s only a matter of time before Arjun runs into his past again.

With terribly crass humour, over-the-top fight sequences and a disjointed script, Ruler has absolutely nothing going in its favour. In fact, the director jumps from one scene to the other with zero explanation given, the editing is amateurish and leaves the viewers confused. One can only hope the second hour will provide some respite.
