Telugu films remade in Bollywood

Remakes have become one of the coolest trends of the film industry. We have seen a lot of Hollywood films that are officially adapted in Bollywood. Many South Indian language films are also being remade in Hindi. A number of Bollywood films are a remake of South films. The Telugu film industry is one of the oldest film industries, and today this film industry is flourishing to a great extent. Some Bollywood films also derive inspiration from Telugu films, which are then remade in Hindi. Here are some super-hit Telugu films remade in Bollywood.

Maro Charitra - Ek Duuje Ke Liye

Maro Charitra is a Telugu romantic tragedy film which was released in the year 1978, and is directed by K Balachander. The film stars Kamal Haasan and Saritha in the lead roles. It is based on cross-cultural romance between a boy and a girl belonging to different castes. Maro Charitra was a blockbuster which became a hit in Andhra Pradesh. It was later released in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka without being dubbed in the respective languages.The Hindi remake of Maro Charitra was named Ek Duuje Ke Liye that released in the year 1981. The film was directed by K Balachander, and starred Kamal Haasan as the male lead. The role played by Telugu actress Saritha in the original film, was played by Rati Agnihotri in the Hindi remake. The film was critically acclaimed and became a blockbuster.

Shubhalagnam - Judaai

Shubhalagnam was released in the year 1994. This film is directed by SV Krishna Reddy. Telugu actors Jagapati Babu, Aamani and Roja play the lead roles in the film. Shubhalagnam was a hit at the box office.
This Telugu film was remade in Bollywood with the title Judaai in the year 1997. It was directed by Raj Kanwar and starred Anil Kapoor, Sridevi and Urmila Matondkar as the lead characters. Judaai had a low opening, but slowly it received good response and became a semi-hit at the box office. Shubhalagnam was such a loved film that it was not only remade in Hindi, but also in Tamil as Irattai Roja, in Kannada as Ganga Yamuna and in Malayalam as Sundara Purushan. It was also adapted into a Hindi TV serial with the title Main Lakshmi Tere Aangan Ki in the year 2011, which aired on Life OK channel.

Athadu - Ek: The Power of One

Athadu is an action thriller which was directed by Trivikram Srinivas. Mahesh Babu, Trisha Krishnan and Prakash Raj play the lead roles in the film that became one of the highest grossing films in Tollywood. It was reported that this film marked Mahesh Babu’s career upturn, after he gave a series of flops. Athadu is considered as one of the classics of contemporary Telugu cinema.
Ek: The Power of One is the Hindi remake of Athadu. This film was directed by Sangeeth Sivan and starred Bobby Deol, Shriya Saran and Nana Patekar in the lead roles. However, it failed to create the kind of magic Athadu created. Athadu was also remade in Bengali as Wanted which became a hit.

Pokiri - Wanted

Pokiri is a gangster-thriller directed by Puri Jagannath. It released in the year 2006. Mahesh Babu, Ileana D’Cruz and Prakash Raj played the pivotal roles in the film. Pokiri was loved by the audiences and it became a hit.
The Telugu hit film was remade in Hindi as Wanted, and starred Salman Khan, Ayesha Takia and Prakash Raj in key roles. The film released in 2009 and was directed by Prabhudeva. It broke several box office records. In an interview with Zoom TV, Mahesh Babu had stated that Salman Khan was the apt person for the remake of his film because of his personality and attitude. Wanted became Bollywood’s second highest grosser of 2009. Pokiri was also remade in other South Indian languages, in Tamil as Pokkiri and in Kannada as Porki.

Vikramarkudu - Rowdy Rathore

Vikramarkudu is a 2006 film directed by S. S Rajamouli. It is an action and drama film which has Ravi Teja, Anushka Shetty and Vineet Kumar in the lead roles. Vikramarkudu received positive response and became a blockbuster.
It was remade in Hindi as Rowdy Rathore which has Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead roles. Rowdy Rathore released in the year 2012 and was directed by Prabhudheva. Akshay Kumar's mustachioed look was well appreciated and he was even praised for his dialogue delivery in the film. Though the film received mixed response from the critics, it was liked by the audience and thus became a blockbuster. Rowdy Rathore is one of the films to enter the Rs 100 crore club in Bollywood. Vikramarkudu is also remade in Tamil as Siruthai, in Kannada as Veera Madakari, in Bengali as Bikram Singha. It was also remade in Bangladeshi Bengali as Ulta Palta 69.

Ready - Ready

Ready is Telugu film released in 2008. This action romantic comedy was directed by Srinu Vaitla. The film stars Ram and Genelia D’Souza. The film gained positive response from the audience and became one of the top grosser films in 2008.
It was remade as in Hindi with the same title. Released in the year 2011, Ready (Hindi) was directed by Anees Bazmee and starred Salman Khan and Asin in the lead roles. It became one of the super hit films of the year 2011. It was also remade in Kannada as Raam and in Tamil as Uthama Puthiran.

Maryada Rammana was released in the year 2010. It is a comedy thriller film directed by S. S Rajamouli. The film starred Sunil and Saloni Aswani in the lead roles. Maryada Rammana became a super hit in the Telugu film industry.
It was remade in Bollywood as Son of Sardaar. Starring Ajay Devgan, Sonakshi Sinha and Sanjay Dutt as the main characters, the film that released in 2012 was directed by Ashwini Dhir. Son of Sardaar did good business at the box office and was declared a hit.

The Hindi remake had the same title and starred Salman Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez in leads. It was released in 2014 and directed by Sajid Nadiadwala. Kick became one of the highest grossing Bollywood films of 2014 even after receiving mixed reviews. Salman sang Hangover song in the film. Kick (Telugu) was also remade as Thillalangadi in Tamil and Super Ranga in Kannada.

Kandireega is a romantic comedy film released in the year 2011. The film is directed by Santosh Srinivas and starred Ram, Hansika Motwani and Aksha Pardasany in the lead roles. Kandireega received good response from the critics as well as the audience and went on to become successful at the box office.
The Hindi remake of Kandireega was titled Main Tera Hero. The film directed by David Dhawan released in 2014 and starred Varun Dhawan, Ileana D’Cruz and Nargis Fakhri. Though the film received a mixed review, it became a semi-hit at the box office. It was compared to ‘90s Govinda-starrer films. It was reported that the film even sparked a comparison between Varun Dhawan and Govinda.Kandireega is also remade in Bengali as Paglu 2.

Okkadu - Tevar

Okkadu is directed by Gunashekhar. It is a melodrama starring Mahesh Babu, Bhoomika Chawla and Prakash Raj in the main roles. The film became one of the super-hit films of 2003 and also won several awards.
The film was remade in 2014 as Tevar in Hindi. Directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, the film starred Arjun Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha and Manoj Bajpayee as the lead characters. Tevar didn’t receive great response from the critics and the audience and was declared a flop. Okkadu was also remade in Tamil and Bengali as Ghilli and Jor respectively, both the films became hit.
