Who's the queen bee?

Anushka is undoubtedly the reigning queen of Tollywood, but are Trisha, Ileana, and Hansika on the verge of staging a coup? TOI talks to the contenders themselves to find out
Who's the queen bee?
It was a royal role she played in Arundhati and soon after its release, Anushka found herself being catapulted to the numero uno slot.
The film proved that she can draw in crowds not just on the strength of her good looks, but also with her talent. Despite riding the wave of success, the actress preferred to downplay it and attributed the roaring success to a good script.
1x1 polls
Titles are transient and somebody could be the flavour next season, she had said. Pragmatically, she has realised that superstardom is mercurial and one more hit from her competitors can change the equations.
Turning her fears true, Ileana returned with smashing hit Kick to reclaim her position in the big league. With a few more big-ticket releases in the pipeline, Ileana is set to give Anushka a run for her money. Not to be left behind, Hansika, the youngest contender in the race has well-chalked out plans to reach the top. I always believed that a solid script is the key to success and even my next film will vouch for it. I have signed two big films and I am sure theyll make the required impact. Ill attain the top slot sooner than later, says Hansika, taking up the challenge.
Unlike in the past, the numero uno position these days is a fleeting one. Thats true. The No.1 slot is no more stable as it keeps swinging from one actress to another. After Pokiri, Illena was hailed as the next big thing but now Anushka occupies the slot with Arundhati. All the contenders are good-looking and talented and are offering variety, so its difficult to bet on one particular actress, says actor Susanth.
He has reason in it, since yesteryear actresses like Savitri, Vanisree, Sridevi, Jayasudha and even Soundarya occupied the top position for a substantial period of time, but the present crop of actresses are less fortunate. However, Trisha says shes least worried about such trends as she is already treated like a queen in Tollywood. I am getting the best of roles even in star-centric films, says the actress, who likes to take life as it comes. To be frank, I didnt even think of entering Tollywood until M S Raju sir persuaded me do Varsham and since then everything fell in place careerwise, she adds. I also bagged three coveted awards for my Telugu films, says the actress, who industry pundits say is a strong contender for the numero uno position.
Summing up the scenario, producer-director Chandra Siddharth feels that pay packets determine the top slot. Filmmakers shell out money depending on the popularity of a particular actress. On the other hand, female-centric films can also establish an actress individual popularity. Except for Anushka, others havent tested waters in that genre. But the competition is fierce and the race to the top is a gripping one, he concludes.
