When Vijay Deverakonda revealed why he added 'The' before his name: 'All the titles I like are taken—Thala, Thalapathy, Thalaivar, Superstar...'

In the South Indian film industry, many stars carry iconic titles like ‘Thalapathy,’ ‘Thala,’ and ‘Thalaivar,’ while the young actor Vijay Deverakonda has expressed his preference to be called ‘The Vijay Deverakonda’ in his films. This choice has sparked curiosity among fans and industry peers.


During an interview with Galatta Plus last year, the ‘Liger’ actor shared the inspiration behind this decision. He revealed his preference for sticking to his given name rather than adopting an honorary title, which is a common trend in the film industry. “All the titles I like are taken: Thala, Thalapathy, Thalaivar, Superstar— all are taken. I don’t know where this system came from. There is a system of having a title for an actor. When there is none, people come up with their own stuff,” he explained. The actor added that his producers have been encouraging him to adopt a title, but he has been resisting their suggestions.

He further elaborated, saying he felt his name was sufficient and was very happy with the name his parents gave him. “There is only one Vijay Deverakonda, and he is The Vijay Deverakonda. I don’t like anything else,” he added. The ‘Arjun Reddy’ actor shared that he particularly liked the sound of his name.

On the work front, Vijay Deverakonda made a cameo appearance in Nag Ashwin’s 'Kalki 2898 AD'. The movie boasts a star-studded cast, including Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Disha Patani. Directed by Nag Ashwin, the film became a major hit, grossing over Rs 1,200 crore worldwide.

Last August, he shared a gripping poster for his upcoming project, which remains untitled, using the hashtag #VD12. The movie is scheduled to hit theatres on March 28.
