Veteran actress Jamuna passes away at age 86 in Hyderabad: Tollywood celebs mourn her passing
Tollywood celebs and movie buffs woke up to a shocker on Friday with the news that veteran actress Jamuna is no more.
The spunky diva who acted in numerous Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Hindi films in his career before retirement passed away at home due to age-related issues. Born as Jana Bai in Hampi in 1936 August, the actress’ family moved to Duggirala, Guntur where she grew up. She was only 15 or 16 when she debuted with Garikapati Rajarao’s Puttillu in 1953. But she received her breakthrough when she acted in LV Prasad’s Missamma in 1955.
When she ventured into Hindi cinema and reprised her role from the 1964 Mooga Manasulu in the 1967 remake Milan, she even won a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. In the 1980s, Jamuna would go on to join politics. Jamuna’s legacy will always remain alive with films like Gundamma Katha, Dorikithe Dongalu, Srimanthudu and more. While she’s known for her illustrious career, she was also known for the equation she shared with the late Savitri.
When Savitri was performing theatre in Duggirala, she had stayed at Jamuna’s home. Later, she invited Jamuna to act in films when the latter showed an interest in acting. But Jamuna gave it all up when she married Professor Juluri Ramana Rao, a zoology professor in 1965. They lived a happy and fulfilled life till he passed away in 2014 due to a cardiac arrest. Jamuna is now survived by a son Vamsee and daughter Sravanthi.
