Its the season for political films. And since politics and films have been inseparable in Tollytown ever since the legendary NT Rama Rao went on to create history in the state, its a pre-poll tradition of sorts for rajneeti films to hit the marquee around election time. Already, the recently-released Gabbar Singh, Dammu and Racha are being talked about for their dialogues loaded with political innuendo and Balakrishnas upcoming film, we learn, is going to be the baap of all these films, with the actor taking veiled potshots at his political opponents.
According to a source, the film had run into financial problems and was delayed, but a political party helped in bailing out the film before the elections.
Political charitra It all started way back in 1982, when NTR joined politics. The preferred election campaign tool, be it for Assembly, Parliament or for local polls, were cassettes and CDs that had pre-recorded NTR dialogues and songs blaring on loudspeakers. Later on, these dialogues and songs were incorporated in films and released closer to the polls. Soon, other actors with political aspirations took the cue and that led to the rise of a new genre of self glorification and image-building films in Tollywood. According to a source, in a recent film, the young actor who hails from a political family had deliberately asked the dialogue writers to come up with lines to project a powerful political image.
Commenting on the trend, filmmaker Chandra Siddharth, says, Earlier, films had a script which actors followed, now its the other way round. Scripts are written to glorify the lead actor, propagate his ideology or challenge his opponents. Hence audiences are no longer looking at a star as an actor who is essaying a role, but as someone who is conveying a personal message to them. The punch dialogues become a talking point because most viewers know who the star is targeting.
Whats the impact? But do all these tactics work? Filmmaker Thammareddy Bharadwaj thinks these films may not have an impact at the poll booths. When you make a film with a personal agenda and verbally target somebody, I dont think it will work. Fans may like the dialogues and it might help the film at the BO, but I dont think it will impact their voting decision. Apart from the dialogues, the film needs to have relevant content, he says.
Chandra Siddharth, however, has a different viewpoint. Most of the stars have an affinity to some political party and the audience knows it. They can read between the dialogue lines. Also, the fan following for these stars is very huge and is similar to a political cadre. So, its much easier for the star to campaign for a party through his film. Dialogues apart, actors who have a political connection, are choosing subjects like the hero fighting for a cause, for a village, people or for the country, to enhance their political image.
Summing up the trend, filmmaker Suresh Babu says, Films may or may not have an impact, but they certainly help create the mood for the polls!
