Sumanth Ashwin seems oddly at peace, unaffected by the frenzy surrounding the release of Happy Wedding. Sumanth plays the role of Anand, an everyday man he claims anyone can connect with, in the romantic drama directed by
Lakshman Karya, a debutant. Talking about his role, the actor says, “Anand is a guy from Vijayawada who’s very sincere, passionate and honest. He just likes making everyone around him happy,” he says, adding, “But it was not an easy character to play.
When a character is larger than life, it’s easier to pull off, but when it’s more rooted and human, it’s pretty difficult. Even Niharika’s character, Akshara and every other character in the film are all very relatable. Tollywood churns out a lot of love stories, but Happy Wedding is different; the plot sets it apart. There are no forced elements in the film.”
Apparently, the story revolves around the events that take place in the three months leading up to Anand and Akshara wedding. Sumanth gets surprisingly candid with us when he says, “To be honest, I have been stereotyped in the lover boy role but I am actually not a fan of love stories. Sci-fi, fantasy and off-beat films are more my type. But, I believed in the script of the film because I felt everyone could connect to it,” he says with candour, revealing, “It was the pre-climax scene that made me say yes to the project. I am super confident the scene will stay with the audience.”
Working with Niharika was a ball, says Sumanth. “Initially she was really quiet. But later she opened up and honestly, no one can be bored when she’s around. I have a lot of respect for her family,” he says, earnestly, adding, “She’s kind of like how Anand is in the film, in real life she just makes everyone happy on set. But even on-screen, she delivered a stupendous performance. When my grandmother watched the film, she could only talk about Niharika afterwards, telling me how well she acted,” he laughs, rounding off.
