Thaman faces backlash for controversial comments on marriage; Says "Girls want to be independent"
Music composer Thaman S is facing heat on the internet over his recent remark about marriage during an appearance on Nikhil Vijayendra Simha's podcast.
The 41-year-old composer shared his thoughts on the current state of marriage, suggesting that it has become increasingly difficult to maintain relationships in today's society.
During the podcast, he was asked when is the right time for marriage, to which he expressed his belief that people should reconsider getting married at this time. He stated that marriages have become tough due to changing societal norms and women's independence.
He stated, "Right now, I don’t want anyone to get married. It's become tough because the girls also, they want to be independent in life. They don't want to be under (any) one. So, I think we lost kind of that…one kind of girl society."
Thaman commented that many women today prefer to be self-sufficient and do not want to be dependent on anyone, which he feels has led to a loss of traditional values in relationships.
He further shared that social media, particularly Instagram, has influenced people's perceptions of relationships. Thaman suggested that the platform creates unrealistic standards of perfection, leading individuals to overlook the effort required to build a successful marriage.
He said, "Maybe, I don't know if I'm using the right words. Because, we only share beautiful things there, but not the struggle that goes behind it. But right now, I don't recommend marriages; it's become very tough to understand the standards. I see people getting divorced left and right; it has become common. No one wants to adjust."
Thaman's comments quickly sparked a backlash online, with many users criticizing his views as outdated and misogynistic. Comments flooded social media platforms, with some users accusing him of implying that women's independence is detrimental to marriage. One user called him "Boomer uncle". Another user posted, "Innocence is a fetishization of inexperience."
Another user commented, "Very conveniently he put the blame on women's need for independence! Does it mean that independent women do not deserve companionship and love. He is just proving the typical men's mentality in a marriage where they want to control everything."
On the work front, Thaman recently composed music for 'Game Changer', 'Daaku Maharaaj' and is currently working on several upcoming projects including 'Jaat,' 'The Raja Saab,' 'OG,' and 'Akhanda 2.'
