Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s debut production, 'Subham', saw a noticeable dip in box office collections on its second day.
According to the Sacnilk website, the horror comedy, which stars Harshith Malgireddy and Shriya Kontham in lead roles, earned Rs 56 lakhs on Day 2, bringing its total India net collection to Rs 1.31 crore.
Slow Start Despite Unique Concept
Released in Telugu, 'Subham' opened to Rs 75 lakhs on its first day. The film had created some buzz due to its unique storyline and Samantha’s involvement as a producer. However, the numbers suggest that the film is struggling to sustain audience interest after the initial curiosity. As per early trends, the worldwide gross currently stands at Rs 1.46 crore, though the film has yet to register any strong overseas performance.
A Chilling Plot Set in a Quaint Village
Set in the quiet town of Bheemili during the early 2000s, the film revolves around Srinivas (Harshith Malgireddy), a cable TV operator, and his new wife Srivalli (Shriya Kontham), an MBA graduate. Their peaceful life takes a turn when Srivalli starts behaving strangely every night at exactly 9 PM. As similar incidents occur across the village, Srinivas uncovers a disturbing pattern affecting the women in town. The narrative blends supernatural suspense with psychological tension, making it a genre-bending experiment.
Mixed Reception, Awaiting Word of Mouth Boost
While Subham offers a refreshing premise, the dip in Day 2 collections indicates mixed audience reception. Critics have pointed out the film's potential but noted that it falls short in execution. ETimes gave the film a rating of 3 stars out of 5 and our review reads, “The film thrives in its setting. The seaside charm of Bheemili is utilised with flair, giving the story a rich visual and cultural texture. The daily serial motif becomes a clever tool for exploring themes of obsession, gender roles, and blind devotion to television narratives. Samantha makes a brief but effective appearance as Maya Sri, lending star value, a touch of mysticism, and leaving a fun impression.”
