Ramoji Rao: A visionary of Indian media and entertainment passes away at 87

The founder of Ramoji Film City, Cherukuri Ramoji Rao, passed away at Star Hospital in Hyderabad at the age of 87. Rao had been undergoing treatment for health issues. His passing marks the end of an era for Indian media and entertainment.

Born on November 16, 1936, in the small village of Pedaparupudi in Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, Ramoji Rao's contributions to the industry are monumental. He established Ramoji Film City, the world's largest film production facility, revolutionizing the film industry.

Ramoji Rao's journey began with the founding of a popular regional newspaper, which quickly became a leading publication in Andhra Pradesh. He expanded his media empire with the launch of the ETV Network, a group of television channels that have entertained and informed millions. Additionally, Usha Kiran Movies, his film production company, produced numerous successful films. Rao also ventured into the hospitality sector, becoming the chairman of the Dolphin Group of Hotels in Andhra Pradesh.

One of Rao's most ambitious projects was the Ramoji Film City, inaugurated in 1996. Located near Hyderabad, this complex spans over 1,666 acres and holds the Guinness World Record as the world's largest film studio complex. It has become a dream destination for filmmakers, offering state-of-the-art facilities and a variety of shooting locations. The film city has hosted numerous Indian and international productions, significantly boosting India's film industry. Notable films shot here include 'Baahubali: The Beginning', 'Baahubali: The Conclusion', 'Robot' and 'Magadheera', among others.

His contributions to the media industry were recognized in 2016 when he was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award, by then-President Pranab Mukherjee.
