Ram Gopal Varma's words stripped apart and mocked in the film Wrong Gopal Varma

Directed by Journalist Prabhu and starring Shakalaka Shankar with Mahesh Kathi’s cameo, Wrong Gopal Varma is described by the filmmakers as a ‘verbal attack’ on a ‘reputed director’. This ‘film’ is nothing but 40-odd-minutes of footage that questions everything available about Ram Gopal Varma in public domain. After catching the film’s premiere on Thursday, here’s our review:

Story: Wrong Gopal Varma is a constructive analysis and satire on director Ram Gopal Varma’s career and statements by a Tollywood journalist.

Review: Wrong Gopal Varma’s aim is to show how director Ram Gopal Varma is a good director who just happens to be on the wrong track. With no story or even screenplay driving this film (if it can be called that), it makes a commentary on everything from RGV’s obsession with Sridevi to the way he is obsessed with women’s thighs.

More than a film, this is nothing but a show where a journalist mocks a filmmaker for his choice of words and films both. Allegations are also made that RGV is putting a whole generation in danger by promoting recklessness and irresponsibility through his movies. The controversial filmmaker, who is often spotted on prime time shows, has always reiterated the fact that he is a law-abiding citizen and that his actions are never technically illegal. But the director questions the morality of it all and wonders what gives him the right to make money out of other people’s pain or fame.

The final chunk even gives him a taste of his own medicine, inspired by Powerstar, in which RGV preaches to a Pawan Kalyan doppelganger about his political career. In the same vein, Prabhu preaches to an RGV doppelganger (played by an able Shakalaka Shankar) that this film is made out of agony as he keeps defaming the film fraternity. While many of Prabhu’s views on RGV are disagreeable, he makes it clear that this film is only his observation and opinion on the filmmaker.

However, for anyone who watches RGV’s interviews, it’s clear that the filmmaker has already answered questions raised by the film. There are times when he has either agreed with the point-of-view shown in the film or apologised. The thing with Ram Gopal Varma and his antics is that he is often too quickly judged and misunderstood, but never ignored. Maybe, it's time he's left alone!
