Pawan Kalyan Jokes row escalates: Comedian Anudeep Katikala detained days after public apology

Days after issuing a public apology amid backlash over jokes referencing actor-politician Pawan Kalyan and other Telugu film personalities, Hyderabad-based stand-up comedian Anudeep Katikala was detained by Andhra Pradesh police on April 14 from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, where he was visiting his parents. The action follows an FIR filed earlier this week at Kakinada Police Station based on a complaint by a member of the Jana Sena Party, alleging that his YouTube-uploaded set contained objectionable remarks.


What happened?

Anudeep was detained after his set featuring jokes about Pawan Kalyan, Niharika Konidela, and Ram Charan sparked a legal complaint. While the comedian issued an apology — explaining the set was meant to “normalise feminism and destigmatise divorce”— Kakinada police moved forward with BNS charges. Reportedy, he was transported on a train to Kakinada, accompanied by his parents

‘Excessive and inhumane’: Comedians slam Anudeep Katikala’s detention

“Some of the jokes may not have been in the best taste, but they are still just jokes. It feels excessive for the police to travel all the way to Prayagraj to detain a comedian over this, especially when far more serious crimes occur every day. As a society, we are not yet at a place where public figures can be freely satirised without backlash, unlike in many Western countries. That said, both the jokes and the extreme reactions they provoked could have been avoided.”
