Paper Boy movie review highlights: A predictable bore

What happens when a poor man falls for a rich girl? The financial complications, the insecurities, the misunderstandings and let’s not forget, the sermons we audience listen in such stories on the silver screen.

Jayashanker’s

Paper Boy

is no different. Ravi (Santosh Sobhan) is a paper boy who loves to read and is highly principled. Paperlu veyyadam thakku emo kaani thappu kadu, he keeps saying throughout the film. He falls for Dharani, who comes from wealthy family. He’s reluctant to pursue her, afraid that his “sthaay” (status) may not match her level, and yet, the both of them connect. What follows is whether two of them have it takes to pursue their love despite the financial difference between the two of them.

With a plot as predictable as this, the filmmaker makes no attempt to offer something new to the audience. The humour falls flat and the sermons about traditional marriage and dignity of labour are tiring after a point. The interval sequence comes with a typically predictable twist. We hope the second half offers something better.
