The lockdown due to the on-going novel
coronavirus pandemic brought the Indian film industry to a standstill, putting shoots and releases on hold.
Movie theatres were shut down even before that and there has been talk since a few weeks of some Telugu films opting for a digital release on
OTT
platforms instead of
theatrical
. While most
filmmakers
remain adamant that they will wait out the pandemic and bear losses instead of opting for a digital release for films made for theatres, it has been a difficult time for the industry.
Amrutharanam was the first Telugu film to opt for a direct-digital release during lockdown, but the film received lukewarm response from fans and critics alike. Numerous big-budget film names keep making rounds too but the makers have clarified it’s not going to happen.
Seerat Kapoor, who has
Krishna and his Leela
and
Maa Vintha Gaadha Vinuma
lined up, with releases being pushed due to lockdown, has announced that one of her two films will soon get a direct-OTT release.
“While I understand that movie buffs look forward to savouring films in theatres, one of the filmmakers of my two upcoming films is considering getting a digital release for the film. After all, it’s an unprecedented situation and the need of the hour is to adapt to change,” she says, adding, “I cannot reveal which of the two films will get a digital release yet however as talks are still on. The filmmakers will announce the same soon though.”
Krishna and His Leela was slated for release during the summer. The film is directed by Ravikanth Perepu of Kshanam fame and also stars
Sidhu Jonnalagadda, Shraddha Srinath and Shalini Vadnikatti in the lead roles with music by Sricharan Pakala. Maa Vintha Gaadha Vinuma also sees her teaming up with Sidhu under the direction of Aditya Mandala. Further details are awaited.
