As the entire nation celebrates its 74th Independence Day on Saturday (August 15), it’s the perfect time to examine how the Telugu film industry has portrayed patriotism over the years with narratives, songs and hard-hitting dialogues. Despite watching multiple times, this stimulating content is certain to ignite our patriotic spirit and give us goosebumps.Classics like Alluri Seetarama Raju, Khadgam, Roja, Bharateeyudu, Major Chandrakanth and Bobbili Puli among many others are still continuing to stoke patriotic fervour even today. Helmed by maverick director Krishna Vamsi, Khadgam stands out for its riveting narration, captivating music and powerful dialogues that showcase Hyderabad as a shining example of religious harmony. Especially, the foot-tapping number of ‘Meme Indians’ composed by Devi Sri Prasad depicts the attitude and unity among Indians with a hint of satire and humour. However, the scene where military officer Shivaja Raja explains the sacrifice of Indian soldiers to Prakash Raj and Ravi Teja will certainly evoke your patriotic spirit to the core.


In the confrontation scene between a Pakistani terrorist and an Indian police officer, Prakash Raj mouths some hard-hitting dialogues explaining the religious harmony between Hindus and Muslims in India. This iconic sequence is from Nagarjuna’s 2000 vigilante film ‘Azad’ directed by Thirupathisamy. A decade later, Tamil Superstar Vijay’s superhero film Velayudham was inspired by Azad.


Based on the life of revolutionary freedom fighter Alluri Seetharama Raju, the 1974 biographical film serves as a wakeup call for all Telugu people to be patriotic and fight fearlessly for the country. Krishna Ghattamaneni delivered a spectacular performance in the titular role and especially in the climax sequence; his motivating dialogues when he gets shot by the British soldiers are still afresh in the minds of Telugu viewers.


Starring Venkatesh as the protagonist, the fictional historical drama directed by K Raghavendra Rao didn’t perform well at the box-office. But, a couple of songs and a few scenes portraying the sacrifices of our freedom fighters struck the right chord with the audience. In this particular sequence, the lead actor mouths a powerful dialogue regarding the importance of our tri-colour flag and it certainly deserves a watch.


Besides the patriotic song of Punya Bhoomi Naa Desam which showcases the achievements and sacrifices of renowned freedom fighters like Chhatrapati Shivaji, Subhas Chandra Bose, Alluri Seetharama Raju, and Veerapandiya Kattabomman, several scenes from Senior NTR’s Major Chandrakanth highlighted the necessity of patriotism in each and every citizen born in the country.
