YVS Chowdary's full name is Yalamanchili Venkata Satyanarayana Chowdary. He was born in Gudiwada, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, to Yalamanchili Narayana Rao and Ratnakumari on 23 May 1965. He was an engineering dropout.

YVS Chowdary is a big fan of Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao. During his school days, he formed the NTR Fans Association at his native place and held its president position. He married to Geeta Chowdary and the couple has two children, Yuktha Chowdary and Ektha Chowdary.

YVS Chowdary was introduced to editor Narasimha Rao by his friend who suggested him to join as an

assistant editor

. He began his film career as an assistant to Giridhar who had helmed Aggi Pidugu with Giri Babu and Kannada actor V Ravichandran.

YVS Chowdary's first break in the film industry was in Tollywood when he assisted K Raghavendra Rao in the 1986 film, Kaliyuga Pandavulu, which marked the debut of both Venkatesh as a hero and Khushboo in the South Indian film industry.

His debut film as a director, 1998 release Sri Sita Ramula Kalyanam Chootamu Raarandi, opened to great reviews and he was technically and creatively qualified. The film, made on a shoestring budget, went on to become a huge hit at the box office. His next release, Seetharama Raju was also a blockbuster and made YVS a

YVS Chowdary is touted as the household name of Telugu cinema owing to his history of making critically as well as commercially successful films. Right from Sri Sita Ramula Kalyanam Chootamu Raarandi to Devadasu, all of his films have been high budget films and interestingly, all of them turned out to be commercially successful at the box office. Lahiri Lahiri Lahirilo brought YVS into the top league of filmmakers.

YVS has a lion’s share in the success of late Nandamuri Harikrishna’s film career. The director helmed memorable films like Seetharama Raju, Lahiri Lahiri Lahirilo and Seetayya that redefined Harikrishna’s stardom.

YVS Chowdary is among the few directors who had worked with most of the A-list actors including Akkineni Nagarjuna, Nandamuri Harikrishna, Mahesh Babu, late legendary Akkineni Nageshwara Rao, Nandamuri Balakrishna, Mohan Babu and Ravi Teja. He introduced debutants like Venkat, Chandini, Chandu, Aditya Om and Ankitha, Ram Pothineni, Ileana D'Souza, Sai Dharam Tej and Saiyami Kher.

Apart from being a director, he is also a successful filmmaker. He established his own production house named "Bommarillu Vaari" as he received a token of inspiration from late legendary actor-cum-politician Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao. YVS Chowdary is one of the highest-paid directors in Tollywood. In a career spanning 21 years, he has directed 10 Telugu films. He is also one among the Telugu directors to have fewer flops to his credit.
