Every film he makes is fiercely anticipated and destined for almost certain critical and commercial success. He was born on May 11 in Vedulla Cheruvu village, Renigunta, Chittor. Gandhi made his entry into the industry as a short film director and directed Karmara Devuda, which went viral on social media. Today, the director turns a year older. Merlapaka Gandhi made his directorial debut with the 2013 rom-com Venkatadri Express, starring Sundeep Kishan and Rakul Preet Singh. The film became a commercial success, and he won several accolades for his gripping narration. Sundeep misses his train when his family leave for Tirupathi for his brother's wedding. He must reach Tirupathi to avoid his father's wrath, but his detour lands him into a lot of trouble. This film's honesty and relativity was a hit with the audience, and Sundeep Kishan was lauded for his performance as a youngster who shows responsibility for the society.

Gandhi's second film, Express Raja which was about to find out a dog, released in 2016. The film starred Sharwanand and Surbhi in the lead roles. The comedy-thriller not only received positive reviews and but also box office success. Express Raja is the story of an unemployed youth Raja who is in love with Amulya and mistakenly hands over her pet dog to the municipal corporation. Amulya becomes furious and Raja ends up facing challenges while he tries to retrieve her pet. Considered to be a super hit, this film also gave a fresh turn to Sharwanand's career.

Merlapaka Gandhi had teamed up with Natural Star Nani for this action-comedy Krishnarjuna Yudham which is about women trafficking. It tells the story of two guys Krishna and Arjun who are lookalikes from different parts of the world, must work together to find the women they love after they are kidnapped. The film stars Anupama Parameswaran, Rukshar Dhillon in the female lead roles. Nani played the dual role for the second after Janda Pai Kapiraju. Gandhi was praised by the critics for his contemporary subject, but it was not a commercial success.

Gandhi is all set to team up with actor Nithiin for the remake of critically acclaimed Hindi hit film Andhadhun. Priyanka Arul Mohan of Gang Leader fame has been confirmed as the leading lady while Ramya Krishnan will be seen essaying a crucial role. The rest of the cast and crew of the remake are yet to be announced. Apparently, the Telugu remake rights of Andhadhun were bought for a massive Rs 3.5 crore by Nithiin's home banner Shrest Movies.
